My first overclock: Q9550. Need help please.

Thread Starter
I'm planning to overclock my q9550 next week when my new cooler arrives, an Arctic Freezer 13 Pro.
My specs are as follows:

Q9550, currently at stock values
Gigabyte GA-X48-DS4 Motherboard
8GB DDR2 at 1066Mhz 5-5-5-15 timing ( 4 x 2gb sticks)

Not hoping for any massive overclock, but some easily achievable and stable.

I don't really get the whole concept of changing ram speeds and various other voltages, so any advice on that would be appreciated.

Cheers.

You'll have a more difficult time if you're using all 4 DIMM slots, I'll tell you that much. Put's a lot more stress on the northbridge and will make OC a bit more of a challenge.

Fear not - however, for I once had a q9450 and 8gb of ram and was able to push over 500FSB stable. Just took a *lot* of minor voltage tweaking. Lot of hours to get there, too.

Ehm... let me see. Everest tells me that the CPU stepping is : C1/M1. How about that?

And yeh, I am using all 4 dimm slots - 4 x 2gb 1066 Sticks.

Thanks guys.

Now, all this is new to me. Where do you recommend I start? I'll read the beginners guides and take care of all the power saving features and that, but where do I go from there? If I were to increase the FSB up to 400 (or whatever you recommend as a starting point) then whats the safest way to go about voltage tweaking?

I've only tried overclocking once before on the stock intel fan and it didn't go well. I got very worried that my computer might never start again, it kept shutting down after a couple of seconds, but eventually I managed to get back into the BIOS and reset the defaults.

I've got a SLB8V stepping Q9550 that did 4.2GHz at 1.344 with only two 2GB sticks of OCZ Reaper DDR2 1066. With four 2GB sticks of this RAM it maxes out at 4GHz with change.

444 444

I bought it in late November of 2008.
Using Asus P5Q Pro and Xigmatech S1283.

okay, thanks for the input. So maybe since I have the C1 revision and 4 sticks of ram I should aim for something like 3.8GHz?

I'll post my temps as soon as I get my hands on this new cpu cooler.

I remember 3.8GHz being my goal for this rig. I was very pleasantly surprised when it was able to complete benches at 4GHz, and then 4.2.
3.4Ghz would be nothing, could probably do that on close to stock clocks. Then 3.8 will be easy aswell. After that it gets much harder. 4.0 is easy to do within the limitations of voltage and such. However, 4.1 and on is the luck of the draw.

Good luck and when you have an OC submit it to the Q9550 club!

Well then I guess I'll go for the 3.8Ghz, and if that's too easy I'll push it a little more, but I'd be quite happy with 3.8 for my first overclock.

Can anyone recommend where to start with this?

Should I go straight for 450FSB or start lower?

If I went for 450 FSB, what voltage do you think I should start with on Q9550 ?

And as for my 1066 ram. Should I lower the speeds on these to get the 1:1 ratio? Ideally I'd like them run at their intended 1066.
And how about ram timings?

Thanks again.

450FSB would be about 1.25v...even that might be too much/little. You should not need 1.3. Depending on the case. I would run lower ram speeds until the cpu is stable...this ensures that the cpu is stable. However I had a glitch with that. When I was re-overclocking my cpu after 4Ghz I could not run any other ram multiplier. So I had to stay at the speed I am at now. 1150 mhz and it runs stable, all of the other ones would error in like 2 minutes.
