My first overclock: Q9550. Need help please. - Page 2

#1: I'd use 2 sticks until you find out what your machine is capable of. 4 sticks will be more difficult, or just plain lower your limits on 775. The NB can't take it unfortunately.
#2: You should find the limits of your board's FSB first thing. X48 isn't known for pushing the highest FSB. Set RAM 1:1, set CPU multiple low (like 6x) and run the FSB up till failure. X48 can require alot of NB voltage. Mine needs 1.41V just for 400-ish.

After you find your FSB limits, you'll know more where you stand on getting the most from the 9550.

OK, currently testing 450FSB with X6 multiplier. I've lowered my ram to 800 for the 1:1 ratio and upped the CPU voltage to 1.25. I am also just starting with two sticks of ram. (Actually I've just noticed that this means I don't have a 1:1 ratio, but all seems well anyway, I'll put the ram at 900 on my next change)

Looking good so far. I don't think I'll push the FSB any further, but my next step will be to put the multiplier back to 8.5. If that seems stable then I'll try and get my ram back up to full speed - 1066.

Temps so far with prime 95 running for a half hour or so: 59 - 56- 56 - 56

Thanks guys.

P.S That voltage you recommended seems very high 2thAche.

Na my Q9550 on my budget P5Q SE/R I need to run my Northbridge at its' BIOS max of 4.0 volts. I stuck a mini fan on the heatsink to dissipate the added heat. If my BIOS would let me go higher I could probably hit 4.0Ghz on my Q9550 e0 but sadly I can't, I can do 3.8Ghz though but I ran into some data corruption which is why I am back at 3.6Ghz.

You will need some decent cooling on the Northbridge, this makes a huge difference in stability.

hmmm. 4 volts you say. This is all new to me. The northbridge voltage can be controlled similar to the cpu voltage?? I'll just leave it for now. My northbridge has some pretty big copper heat sinks on so that might help.

Update: I put the multiplier back up to 8.5 and I got a BSOD after a few minutes - "Error: modification of system code or critical data". So, I've given the CPU a little more voltage - 1.263. We'll see how this goes. Waiting for it to crash...

Crash! Error with prime 95 on core 4: rounding was 0.5 expected less than 0.4.

I've now upped the voltage to about 1.273 and it seems more stable. That prime 95 error is gone. biggrin.gif

oh no, the error is back again, but I made it further this time. Upping voltage a little more ( 1.29) ...

Looking good so far. But temps have risen to 65-62-62-62.

FATAL ERROR: Final result was 710B2E87, expected: 3247CE82

Hmm... I had to use closer to 1.28-1.3 volts to get 3.8Ghz gaming stable on my setup. I would crank the voltage up a bit more and find a stable point, then slowly lower it till it crashes again. Then you can find that sweet spot. thumb.gif

Will do, but at the moment I'm worried about my ram. I ran memtest after google told me to and it found an error in my ram. Is it possible that underclocking my ram would produce and error? Or is there just definitely something wrong with my ram or motherboard?

Underclocking your Ram? Not usually. Most likely the North Bridge needs a boost in volts, as that will give you memory errors. The max I would ever go is 4.5 1.45 volts on the NB with active cooling (a fan). If you can raise the NB volts by small amounts try for 4.1 1.4 or 4.2 1.42 and see if that removes the errors.

You should also have the Memory voltage set manually. The sticker on the Ram stick will tell you what it is.

ah ok. Thanks. I didn't see a setting for the northbridge voltage in the BIOS but I'll have another look. I'm running a different stress test with prime 95 now, one that doesnt test the ram so much. Looking ok so far, but only had about 20 minutes. CPU voltage at 1.3 now.

Look for NB Core Voltage. If you have not changed it try 4.0v 1.4v to start.

I dont not see a northbridge or nb voltage setting in my BIOS. Here is what I have:

system voltage control
ddr overvoltage control
pci-e overvoltage control
fsb overvoltage control
mch overvoltage control
loadline voltage control
cpu voltage control

All I have changed is the cpu voltage to 1.3. Anything else I should change there?

Also, with the system memory multiplier I chose x2 = 900mhz Ram. But I have choices of 2.00A, 2.00B, 2.00C, 2.00D. Any idea on which to use there?

And how would I get my ram to 1066mhz if I can only choose a 2.40 multiplier (1080mhz)#

Thanks!

Just found a thread very similar to my setup. http://www.overclock.net/t/540026/beyond-4ghz-help-x48-q9550-voltages-help

I think I'll just copy his values.
