My first overclock: Q9550. Need help please. - Page 3

RAM latches go by FSB speed. The BIOS should explain which is which.

Also, have you manually set the RAM voltage?

I would set the G(MCH) to 1.54v since the X48 is designed to take 1.65v, and maxes out at 1.75v. Then set your FSB overvoltage to 1.28v. anything above 1.38v is uneccessary. Finally, drop the vcore way down. It will not last long at that voltage at all. The recommended safe voltage for the 45nm chips is 1.3625v. I never ran my Q9650 above that ever.

I have a thread linked below in my sig for the ASUS X48 boards (ASUS P5E/Maximus Thread). The difference in bios settings is as follows. In the ASUS bios, NB is G(MCH), FSB Termination Voltage is FSB Overvoltage.

I pulled this out of that thread you linked. The naming scheme is different. Make sure to read the additional comments as the first settings that OP had were really high. That thread is also for a e0 stepping Q9550. So you will have to tinker a little more as yours is not the same.

thanks. But a lot of that quote doesn't make sense. It's not possible to set the overvoltage for the fsb anywhere near that high. But i'll keep on reading and trying and see how it goes.

And yes alex thanks. I have manually set my ram voltage to get 2.1

its seems somewhat stable at 1.3 vcore voltage, but temps not great, 71-66-66-65 on full load. But i'll keep working on it.

Question. My ram is supposed to be 5-5-5-15 timing. So I've manually changed it in the BIOS. Problem is, it wont go under 5-5-5-18 timing. Should I worry about this?

I wouldn't worry too much about RAM timings, at least not yet. Worth coming back to later though....

Sweet. 3.77GHz, stable after a 2 hour stress test. Temps got to about 68-64-64-64 max.

Now hopefully everything will run just as smoothly tomorrow when my extra 4 gigs of ram arrives. Will post result when I get the 8gb of ram stable.

That cooler you picked isn't the greatest.

I don't know why people are talking about "4 volts". Nothing in a PC is going to take 4 volts, and no motherboard is going to generate 4 volts. NB aka MCH core is going to need 1.4x-1.5x but keep get some air on it.

Send that cooler back and get a Hyper 212+. mid 60s at only 3.77 is pretty high IMO.

After you try to add more sticks of memory, you're going to have to push even more NB voltage.

Well temperatures have dropped a little since, the room must have been warmer earlier, think the heating was on. After another 2 hour stress test temps are: 64 - 59 - 60 - 60. Safe enough?

Don't ask me about voltages I'd had no idea about any of this stuff a few days ago! redface.gif

Prime 95 hit that rounding error a while ago, might be something to do with my ram. A stick seems faulty, but I'm hoping I can get away with it.

Thanks for the advice about the nb voltage on the extra ram. I'll keep it in mind tomorrow. Going to leave this running overnight now and see how it gets on.

Well I don't understand this...

All was going well, I was getting good clock speeds and somewhat stable, but now all of a sudden with no changes, my computer wont go past the POST screen anymore. So I tried lowering the clock speed to 450, then to 400, I even tried lowering my cpu multiplier to x6 and ram to x2, but now nothing will go past POST except for stock settings.

Any ideas?

Fff...#$%#%# you are totally right. I dunno what I was thinking... 1.4 is correct. Maybe I took a shortcut in my head doh.gif

OP as a reference I am running my setup at CPU 3.6 @ 8.5 multi. 1.26 vcore, 1.4v NB (my max). Memory manually set at 2.1v 5-5-5-15 @ 1066 w/ 6 gigs.
With a Xigy HDT-s1283 with just the xigy fan in push my temps at max are between 50-60 depending on ambient and what I have airflow at. It can do more on the clock probably with those settings but I got tired of super fine tuning and that is 100% stable for me.
- You should be able to set memory at its rated speed and be able to run 8 gigs no issue.

Did you save your settings as a BIOS profile? Should have that option so you can save each good overclock setting for reference or a fall back. I would drop everything back to default and try for a 3.4 or 3.6 overclock on the cpu and go up from there.
