Sudden Overheating issues

Thread Starter
Hey all,

I used to have my computer laying flat, but ever since i installed it into a new case, which is upright, my CPU has started overheating a lot more.

For example,

I was using After effects, it was only using 25% CPU power and my temps had jumped up to near 70C. it never used to do that.
seems that even the slightest extra use of power, even opening new tabs in chrome, has caused it to heat up dramatically.

It was overclocked to 4.4GHz, but i tuned it down to 4.1 to see if that would help. it was running fine at 4.4 before, why the change?

All help and ideas are appreciated

Might be an expected question, but have you tried re-seating your CPU cooler?

See i thought of that, but there is literally no movement if i try and 'nudge' it with my hand. there's not much i can do to re-seat it as it's the simple push pins, no twisty screws

What he means is, the TIM application you did when you put your components into your new case might have been sub-par. So, my advice would to be remove the heatsink and remove all the old paste with isopropyl alcohol, and then re-apply the TIM with a proper method carefully this time.
did you replace the TIM after you re-installed cooler? or did you use the old stuff?
like other have suggested, reseat with new TIM adn you should be good to go.
Yeah sounds like it was warm from the get-go. Reapplication of the goops is necessary as others have previously stated.

Ah that's true, didn't think about re-doing that. i will have a go tomorrow, got plenty of the stuff left.
One thing i keep forgetting though, i have a direct Cu cooler, do i need to apply a small blob or a short line of TIM for best performance?

A small blob is enough,if you apply to much trim it will leak all over your cpu and maybe the motherboard.
When you apply the small blob and when you mount the Cpu cooler the small blob extends perfectly on the surface of the cpu and the performance will be just fine.
Cheers!thumb.gif
