What makes Fab 42 special is that it is a modular fab like D1X (which is separated in a manufacturing, development and research portions). However, Fab 42 is more advanced and substantially larger than D1X. The new plant is also the first volume production facility that is compatible with 450 mm wafers, which offer a substantial economic advantage over the current 300 mm generation that Intel launched with its 130 nm processor generation in 2001.

Fab 42 is due to go online sometime next year.

Movin' right along aren't they.... With all that money they made last year or even last quarter, they should be building all over the place.

Wow, I never realized how much work went into making a new process. Do they make a new plant every process shrink?

What do they do with older plants such as ones that were 90nm or 65nm? Do they retrofit them for other processes after new plants are built?

It's probably more expensive for intel to retrofit older factories than to build new ones. I guess. Probably cause they might use the older factories to build like a prototype and then scale it down with each factory till its ready for production. This would probably also explain why AMD outsources their production to GF and the like. And this also gives Intel more control over how things are done which then they are subject to the screws as much as AMD.
