Generally speaking if the plug and the name are the same, it's compatible.

Examples:
USB 1.0/1.1/2.0/3.0
PCI/X/33/66/100/133
PCIe 1.0/1.1/2.0/3.0


Sometimes, the plug doesn't even have to be the same for it to be compatible.
Example:
serial DB-9/DB-25
Narrow SCSI/Fast SCSI/Fast-Wide SCSI/Ultra SCSI/Ultra Wide SCSI/Ultra2 SCSI/Ultra2 Wide SCSI/Ultra3 SCSI/Ultra-320 SCSI
SAS and SATA (only in that direction)
IEEE 1394A/B
