sub for B&W 685's and small room

Thread Starter
I've been looking at the ASW608/10 B&W's I mainly like them because they're small and front firing, being B&W diffidently helps as I love the look of their speakers.

http://www.bowers-wilkins.com/Speakers/Home_Audio/600_Series/Products.html

I'm open to other suggestions around the same idea of the 608/10's but I'm really curious if anyone on here has experience with the subs. The only good thing is I have a local store I can demo them at, they also carry a good rang of alternatives.

http://www.peakaudio.ns.ca/manu.html

Above is a link to the store I can demo and all the brands I can listen to.

Below is a current pic of my setup the sub I would put where the filing cabinet is and that would be relocated elsewhere.

So any ideas/suggestions?

Skip the B&W sub. Here's a not very impressive review of the ASW610XP: http://www.audioholics.com/reviews/speakers/subwoofers/asw-610xp
It is fairly capable considering how tiny it is, but for that kind of money I'd rather get a somewhat larger box and a more capable unit overall.

Anyway, what is your budget?

If you want a capable, decently priced, and compact subwoofer, I'd look at the SVS SB12-NSD.

+1 on the SB12-NSD. You can look at the VTF-15H or if you can stretch you budget the PB13. The B&W is very nice for a 10", but those have their limitations.

Budget is around $800, I was thinking the ASW08 as I can get it for $600 and i really wanted something small and still have some power to it.
I do like the sub shown but again size is a factor for me, 4 inches might not sound like a lot but to me it would be.

Well, what's more important to you? Performance or size? The SVS is a definitely not a big sub. The B&W just happens to be tiny. The SVS is a much more capable unit.

I'm not entirely sure what all is available in Canada. Maybe look at the Emotiva X-Ref 10? I dunno if they ship to CA. Another option would be to contact Funk Audio/Funky Waves and see what he can put together for your $800.

do you really need a sub for a room that size? and personally i think it's kind of silly to get subs that cost more than your speakers
also, a sub does not need to be timbre matched to the speakers.. i.e. it doesnt matter what brand you get
anyway, svs is solid, also check out velodyne and REL.. b&w subs are overpriced/not good value

Nothing against the SVS I don't quiet care for the look, also I can't demo them as they're not carried locally. The B&W I'll give a listen to next week when my DacMagic plus come in smile.gif They have a wide range of brands so I'll diffidently give others a good chance.

As far as needing a sub in the room this size (14' x 10ish') I watch a fair few movies on my PC, playing games I'm missing that good low hit of bass.

How are you expecting it to look? They both look like small black boxes. lol. Also, why are you waiting to demo the sub until you get the dacmagic? One has nothing to do with the other.

I Was just saying that I was picking the dacmagic up then, just happy about it getting in (had to order it) As far as looks go I find it overly bland and the curves very boring, I like the soft black texture of the front of the unit (same as speakers) also the look of the wood grain and crisp corners.

Not everything comes down to looks though, ultimately I have to be the one to like how it looks and the SVS I just don't like it.
