Get a good deal on 69XX or get a 79XX?

Thread Starter
Hello everyone,

I wont be getting a new GPU for a couple more months BUT i've kinda been browsing video cards and have been debating on whether it would be wiser to wait until the full 7xxx series is released and grab a good deal (maybe even clearance?) on (2)69xx video cards or get (1) 79xx gpu. My only concerna bout xfiring though is that people have been saying they arent that stable? Is that true?

And one more thing, I currently have a ATI 4850, I play BF3 (shocking) @ 1366x768 @ medium settings and get an avg of about 35ish FPS, I would like to max out BF3 on 1920x1080 ultra with a decent FPS reading of 40 or better. Now I know for some 40 is "unplayable" but I personally have no problem playing at that.

So yea...I just wanted to hear everyone input/suggestion.

Thanks biggrin.gif

I have had crossfired cards for 2 years now and the only complaint I have is that AMD is usually so SLOW at getting their drivers where they need to be. Once the drivers are good, crossfire is good. I have amazing scaling and 99% utilization on both cards running BF3 (100+ fps @1920x1080p). Your board also has pci-e 16 slots spread out to give you proper cooling on both cards. A single 6970 will play battlefield on ultra @ 1080p with acceptable framerates (around 55-65)if that is all you want. But, if you plan on being future proof and running a single card setup, a 7970 would be better.

For 1080p + Ultra + 40fps minimum, a single 6970 will get the job done for sure. I consider a 7970 to be overkill for any game at 1080p, unless you require maxed out AA.

roughly speaking, xfire 6970 and a single 7970 are the same price. I don't mind going xfire (I guess because I've never done it before rolleyes.gif ) and seeing if I do xfire, the GPUs that Im interested in have drivers that have matured and I'd assume that xfire 6970 would be better than a single 7970. Cooling wise, does xfire 6970 get really warm? (warm; comig from a guy whose GPU hits about 95-100C under load wink.gif )

Reference-design 6970's won't exceed 90C with stock fan profile unless you have god awful airflow and ambient temps in your case.

I'm not sure about reference as I have twin frozr II models but being that your board has pci-e x16 slots on slot 1 and slot 4 you will have a nice gap between them for much better airflow. Your DF-10 Case should have sufficient airflow if you have some intake fans in the front. I have my 6950's overclocked and unlocked and my top card hits 85 deg C when both cards at 99% utilization for awhile (I use msi afterburner with a custom fan profile). Also I do believe a stock 6970 runs around 75 deg from experience in a DF-30 case which is very similar to yours.

I love the Corsair 650D, very sweet case and has great airflow from what i've heard and read. XFX and Sapphire are also both good. Their non-reference models have great cooling and are quiet. My brother is running an XFX XXX 6950 and he has it overclocked to 920/1400 with nice temps thumb.gif
