Fresh install of Win 7 on Acer laptop

Thread Starter
Well I am a little confused. My friend has brought over his Acer Aspire 5745 laptop which will not boot into windows. I decided I would try to fix things for him and have been having no luck. Here is how it all went down.

When I first tried to boot it simply froze up once the windows logo appeared. So I decided we should try a system recovery as he has no data on this machine which is vital. Recovery process hung up at 73% for almost an hour. Tried this twice and then said ..... well!

So here is where I really screwed things up. I removed the drive, stuck it into my machine and re-formatted it...... completely. Yes, I even removed the "useless" recovery partition. The idea being that I could simply use my win 7 disk with his validation code and we'd be off to the races. Heck, we'd even lose all the bloatware! I was wrong. Windows will not install on this machine from my disk.

So here are my questions: 1) Does anybody know a work around that will let me use my win 7 disk? What is preventing me from using it ? 2) It seems Acer support does not offer a DL of the recovery disk smile.gif Anyone know where one may be found.....torrent or the like.

On a side note. Managed to get Win 8 beta installed on it but could not get connected to the internet. Perhaps this machine is meant to run ubuntu?????

sounds like the hdd is going bad.

do a SMART scan on it, an try to do a low-level read using hdtune. but if it won't let you instal windows, regardless of disk or method, it leads me to believe it's the hdd.

I've run into this problem before, you are going to have to wipe the hard drive with a wiping tool as the bios puts something on the hard drive to lock it to the partition. Grab hirens boot CD and use the zero fill option of the program of the manufactures program under the hard ware tools.

Well I haven't tried to wipe the drive with Hirens. (Ima noob) Instead I took an ssd i had laying around and put it in, slight mod needed!!! No dice. Installer loads up and the does the coping windows file in about half a second. Then it hangs on the "expanding" section until I get an error message about missing files???? Just put original drive back in and am about to give Ubuntu a shot. What a brick!

So you formatted it on your pc, and put it back in his laptop to install? I would try to not format it, but just delete the partitions. Leave it unformatted. Reset his BIOS to default settings, and make sure your windows disc isn't corrupted. Edit: point being, as Windows installs, it will format the disk for you.

Try installing windows on his hard drive in your PC. That would let you know that the problems isn't with the Windows disc and the hard drive if it works. Process of elimination.

Thanks for the replies guys. I actually hadn't thought of installing onto his disk on my machine. Anyways, I've got Ubuntu running on it now fine and am going to suggest to him he either sell me the laptop or get a recovery disk sent from Acer. There is something going on here I can't understand. Tried 2 separate Win 7 Disks, both gave same results of hanging in the install. Put my SSD into his machine. Same results! Now I have Ubuntu running wonderfully on all the Acer hardware. I don't think its the Win 7 disks causing the problem. Acer wants me to give them $20 bucks and have bricked this hardware purposely????????? Ubuntu is actually pretty cool and will possibly provide me with some much needed experience. For an OS to surf the web and download torrents.... I like!!!
