For Sale or Trade:
[SOLD]AMD FX-8120 NIB 8-Core CPU

Will Ship To: US48

I have a new in the box AMD FX-8120 that is an RMA replacement for the one used in BOINC tests:

http://www.overclock.net/t/1143670/fx-8120-boinc-benchmarks-real-world-stuff

I RMA'ed the first CPU because it BSOD'ed once in a while when overclocked 4.22GHz and had all 8 cores Crunching BOINC tasks... I figured I wouldn't want to sell a used CPU to someone, so try another pick in the barrel. Since then, I discovered a BIOS error in DDR3 timing that probably caused the problem and Asus has yet another Sabertooth BIOS update that I haven't tried that probably corrects it. The same BSOD problem is reported many places for highly overclocked 8120 and 8150's and always the same ... if not a BIOS, then a Micro Code updation will probably cure it.

The CPU works great for what it is, but for BOINC tasks, it under-performs a 3.94GHz 1090T... Even later Sabertooth BIOS updates and Windows tweaks made no difference.

So, I will trade straight across for an 1100T or 1090T+ tiny cash or sell outright or any reasonable trade.

I'm AFK a lot, so delayed response to PM's is normal...

Thanks!

Price drop from 199 to 175...

I will consider any 1100T trade or cash.

You should be able to get at least 4.8Ghz with a 8120 which outperforms a 1100t.

Try these settings with your asus sabertooth. Make sure bios is updated with latest version.

Make sure all cpu power saving features are turned off (cool n' quiet, c1, c1e, c6, cc6, APM, etc.) Make sure mobo power saving features are off too.

FSB - 250Mhz
CPU - x19, x19.5, x20 Multi
CPU - 4750Mhz, 4875Mhz, 5000Mhz
CPU/NB - 2500Mhz
HT Link - 2750Mhz
RAM - 2000Mhz

CPU - 1.525v
CPU/NB - 1.425v
HT Link - 1.3v
NB - 1.225v
RAM - +.025v

DIGI+ VRM Settings:

CPU LLC - Ultra High
CPU OverCurrent Prot. - disabled
CPU/NB LLC - High
CPU/NB Overcurrent Prot. - 100%

You should be able to get atleast 4750Mhz with the 8120. I was able to get 5.1Ghz stable with my 8120. Once you reach 4.6Ghz the FX really starts to shine. I wouldnt give up on the chip. It has a lot of potential. have you tried installing the MS hotfixes for the FX CPU? Try that if you havent - faster application experience, boot time, etc.

FX-8120 is a pretty bad azz chip if you consider its a first gen chip and that it has no optimizations and a whole new architecture. Mobo are still perfecting the bios revisions and what not too. I would give it another chance. You can definitely get more performance out of a 8120 than a 1100t for sure. There is so much overclcokign that can be done to the fx chips its not even funny. Thats what makes them so great. I bet you anything that you can get more performance out of it than the best phenom chip. You just havce to find your chips sweet spot. It takes time but once you do its worth it.

I know running prime at 5Ghz, the whole system pulls about 550Watts from the wall. This is from the wall and for the whole system and is not the wattage of the cpu. To be honest I am not sure exactly what the wattage of the cpu is at 1.525v.

If you look at my Bulldozer rig you will see what I was running on my TX750 PSU and it did just fine.

During gaming at 5Ghz it ran at about 550Watts too with two 6790's in CF

Have you ever tried doing folding on your BD rig at one point? That's when every single component on your PC is being pushed to the max. Prime95 stresses CPU and RAM, but not GPU. Gaming doesn't push every single component to the max either.

Based on your description with Prime95, and takes into account of efficiency lost at PSU and other components at idle, I'd say BD at 5.1 GHz w/ 1.52 V pulls 400 W alone (maybe little more or less, but you get the idea).

That was my concern, I'd almost buy it at that price, if just to mess around with. But with 15 fans, 6 CCFL's, 2 GTX470's, I'm afraid it would kill my TX950. LOL Last chart I saw FX nomed the power after ~4.0.

Edit: distracted typing
