For Sale or Trade: [SOLD]AMD FX-8120 NIB 8-Core CPU - Page 2

Well, that is some interesting information... I will certainly consider a retry at a high overclock if I can't sell it.

But notice the amount of overclock one has to get barely to equal an 1100T on BOINC tasks... at 4.22GHz, the 8120 running 8 tasks was half the speed of a lower power moderately overclocked 1090T... And we are not talking Prime-95 but real world stuff... I discovered a long time ago Prime-95 gives you a start, not a finish and what works all cores on P95 doesn't mean it will work all cores in mixed applications fully loaded...

Points per watt concerns me as well... however, if I can't sell it or trade it... then I will do a small overclock and run it as a 4-core CPU and let the other 4 threads do whatever.... BOINC crunching requires FPU's and sharing them slows things down a lot... like 50%...

Still, except for the extreme load BOINC crunching puts on the 8120, the chip is otherwise a very nice pocessor... It would probably make a very good OC chip for games and professional apps...

I think you can just disable core 2, 4, 6, and 8 to make sure each integer core has a dedicated FPU.

I find interest in messing around with new parts, even if I am still unsure about BD, any interest in a 1055t?

I dont compare cpu's by what they can do at the same clocks. I compare cpus by what they can do maxed out. A 1100t maxes out at 4.2GHz on air or water and a 8120 maxes out at 5.0-5.2Ghz on air or water. A 8120 at 5.0Ghz will beat a 1100t at 4.2GHz. Thats how I look at it. But I see your point. If power consumption is a concern then FX is not the way to go. But personally I think if you are spending thousands of dollars on a computer then power consumption should not be a problem. IMO if you are worried about how much the power bill will be then you should not be spending that kind of money on a system. I see your case though that you are working with a 950watt psu and that does limit overclocking if you have several power hungry components already.
