New chipset options?

Thread Starter
Ok so I let me subscription to MaximumPC expire about 6 months ago. I went to Fry's to look at some motherboards and HOLY CRAPSICLE! Can someone give me a quick 101 on the different chipsets that are now available and which one is the must have?

Thank you

New motherboard only for your Sandy?

Socket 939, there are several options:
- nVidia nForce 4 SLI: SLI, fast, good.
- nVidia nForce 4 Ultra: Fast, excellent overclocking results (DFI Lanparty Ultra D)
- ATI Radeon xPress 3200: Crossfire, good overclocking, runs pretty cool (ASUS A8R MVP Deluxe)
Since you have already a top socket 939 motherboard, I assume you are looking for a more substantial overhaul, upgrading to a new socket. The two most modern sockets are AMD's AM2, and Intel's Socket T (LGA 775). At the moment, Intel holds the performance crown with its Core 2 Duo CPUs (allandale/Conroe). Here is a quick rundown:

AM2:
- nVidia nForce 550: Basic, decent, nothing spectacular
- nVidia nForce 570 (Ultra): the mid range line, good performance, SLI (except Ultra)
- nVidia nForce 590: high-end, good overclocking, SLI
- nVidia nForce4: still available for AM2, I've heard it actually overclocks well. Bit old tech for AM2 though

Intel LGA775 (fore Core 2 Duo also. do not NOT all boards with these chipsets support Core 2 Duo)
- Intel 945P: budget, decent performance, overclocks well on older CPUs, but not seen results for Core 2 Duo yet. ASUS P5LD2 R2.0 (NOT older revisions)
- Intel 965P Express: Intel's newest kid on the block: Outstanding overclocking results (FSB can be over 500MHz), no SLI/Crossfire (unless you have a card with dual slots and modded drivers, will run at x16, x4 though) ASUS P5D (Deluxe)
- Intel 975X: the high-end monster. Newest versions only support Core 2 Duo. Crossfire (supported, x8, x8) or SLI (with modded drivers, runs x8, x8). Very good overclocking results.

Also the nVidia nForce 570 only does 8x8 SLI while the 590 does 16x16 SLI

Sorry, I had to go out of town and could not get back to this post. So if I am an Uber computer parts buyer and wanted to upgrade to the latest/greatest (sticking with AMD), I am going to buy the 590? What RAM does the 590 support? Also, which is the Uberest mboard for AMD ATM? Finally, what are the AM2 advantages?

First, AMD does not stand a chance against Intel at the moment. But that aside.

AM2 supports DDR2 RAM only, and thus you need DDR2 RAM. There is not really a performance increase of AM2 over 939. However, AM2 is more future ready and will work with K8L and is forward compatible with AM3.

The 590 is the chipset to get. The top boards are:
ASUS CROSSHAIR Socket AM2 $238.99
ASUS M2N32-SLI Deluxe $198.99
DFI LP UT NF590 SLI-M2R/G $198.99

So what C2D Intel is significantly better then the CPU I have now? I don't want to spend a bunch of money on something that will only be marginally better.

ANY C2D will out do what ANY AMD owner here currently has. The e6300 is a fine overclocker and its only 180 bucks.

PS: I used to live in Elk Grove myself! Small World!
