Should I wait to buy a laptop? Will it make much of a difference?

Thread Starter
Well I'm going to college this fall and was looking for a laptop.

I'm not looking for laptop suggestions, I'm just asking if it would make a big difference in price or specs if I waited until June-July to buy it? E.g. what new amazing laptop hardware would it be worth it to wait for.

Depends on what you want it to do. Ivy Bridge is coming out in the Spring for desktops, I am not sure if it will be in mobile by then though. For the most part, no, it isnt going to matter, especially if your plan is to have something for internet research and paper writing.

As with all electronics, buy it when you're going to actually use it/need it. Prices always decline on older parts as newer parts are released. I'd be stunned if anything you bought today couldn't be obtained cheaper in June. I say wait unless you'd get great use out of it now.

Definitely wait. Ivy Bridge laptops will have better battery life, and pretty much every CPU (i3, i5, i7, even ultra-low voltage) will get ~400mhz clockspeed bump. That's about 20% performance increase. Also, Ivy Bridge integrated is about 50% faster than SB integrated. And then AMD has Trinity APUs coming out, which are supposed to have similar performance gains - last I read was 20% gain on CPU, 30% on graphics, and the 17W APUs should be about as fast as current 35W APUs. And then there's discrete graphics - I'd expect 20-30% more performance (maybe more) at any given price range and laptop size. All the new CPUs are coming out in April (not 100% sure on Trinity but the rumor is April), graphics card releases are more spread out, but a lot of new ones will be out before June.

Honestly speaking, I think the differences between laptops will make little overall difference unless you plan on really gaming your heart out and if you have a relatively high budget. frown.gif

However, I've found a machine that would allow you to do just that without a problem...

Toshiba Qosmio X775-Q7380 - $999 - Free Shipping! biggrin.gif

I've got the previous generation model, the X505, and I can say these machines are beastly for the pricing. wink.gif

Considering we're this close to Ivy Bridge and Trinity, I'd say wait. Nothing new for mobile GPU's are coming out since we're only getting rebadged ones.

I'm dying to see Trinity vs Ivy Bridge mobile.

New GPUs are coming, too. The rebadges are only the low end stuff.

Yes wait... always better to wait unless it is black friday, then you have to make a decision. Definitely look towards Ivy Bridge. My laptop (which is sandy bridge and weak i3 tongue.gif but good battery life) can play CS:S, TF2, L4D2 pretty well on medium settings. Just think of how much better ivy bridge will be!
