Buying a new RAM kit... need a little help

Thread Starter
I've got two different sets of RAM in my comptuer. One is a Patriot Performance Series 1GB Dual Channel PC3200 Kit, and the other two were assorted RAM with no matching latencies.

I'm going to get rid of the two random ones, but I'm looking to get the 2-3-2-5 or better timings I can get out of the DC kit. What should I do?

If $225.00 isn't much, i'd go for 2x1GB Team Extreme DDR500 and remove the others.

Found at : www.computergiants.com
Item# TXDR2048M500HC3DC-5

G.Skill doesn't sell anymore 2x1GB HZ sets unless you order from Taiwan. Address to follow:

Between 100-150. Trying to budget an upgrade. If I knew someone who would do it, I'd trade my CL Audigy4Pro for it, and maybe an Adesso 86000. I came for RAM though.

Yeah, between 100-150.

Since DDR2 has taken over the newer technology, the older DDR was dropped and prices have shot upwards unfortunately.
Few choices remain.
PC3200 is still available in 2x1gb sticks by several manufacturers.
Overclocking ram once common is becoming harder to find, thats why I provided a link to one of the last suppliers of worthy oc'able ram.

Ebay and OC.Net wanted sections are available for used sticks.

So, I found a few different ones I liked seeing. Kingston HyperX, PQI, and OCZ value RAM. Anything good out of that? I'm sure I can find heat spreaders that'll fit 184-pin RAM, so that's an advantage. Got any opinions?

AFAIK Any Corsair RAM which has Rev. 1.1 is BH-5, and those overclock like hell with übertight timings.

I would indeed replace all four sticks and go for a 2x1 GB kit. Selling the old RAM will give you the money you need. The Team Extreme DDR500 looks good to me!

PS: DDR2 ain't that cheap either... prices also skyrocketed (my Corsair kit was $256 when I bought it on 8/22, then went up to over $350, and now is around $310).

I'd still like to shoot for something like XMS or OCZ Value. Even PQI would be nice. Something below 150USD would make my day. I know that limits what can be done, but I'd much rather expand for less, than to go ape and get something I'll regret later. Expereince leads that I won't need much more than 2GB full on my system, unless I need some real processing capacity. I doubt that'll be a requirement for a while. Thank you all for helping me. I appreciate you dealing with my banter.

What we are suggesting is to get rid of all four sticks of your old RAM!
In AMD systems, performance gets a hit when you run 6 or more banks of RAM (i.e. 3 or more double sided sticks). Since many 512MB sticks are double sided, you likely are in this situation. Read this: http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu...64-e3-mem.html There is some nice information about performance with 4x512MB and 2x1GB.

Sell it all. And I think if yuo do, you should have around $200 - $225 for a 2x1GB kit (there simply is no 2x1GB kit for $150 right now)

This Patriot kit is the cheapest DDR500 kit on Newegg: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820220084 for $239.99. The Team Extreme is not well known, but I have heard good things about it. If you want low latency instead of high bandwidth, here is the 2x1GB version of your Patriot RAM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820220040 for $239.99

If you insist on adding, I'd just get another Patriot kit: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820220006 for $129.99
