Tips for a complete STALKER noob? - Page 4

Clear Sky runs very poorly on my computer even when it's not the highest settings. But Call of Pripyat which has even better graphics runs much better on higher settings then Clear Sky. Clear Sky is really fun though. It's the only one I haven't beat yet, unfortunately. I ran into a glitch and I got myself stuck inside the Red Forest and it was either start the game over again or I have to run all the way back to Cordon then Yantar, ugh. Glitches suck.

On Shadow of Chernobyl I always find myself doing nothing at the Bar just hanging out with the NPC's and pretending I understand what they are saying.

Here's how I always proceed in the first few hours of SoC, including my weapon's of choice (warning: some mild spoilers):

1) Grab the Silenced pistol in the green train car, near the injured guy, right outside rookie village.

2) Scrounge Sawed off from bandits holding Nimble

3) Scrounge a MP5 at Garbage (there's a HUGE cache of AP bullets for it in the derelict scrapyard in Garbage - hint - it's held in crates, up above you, that you have to shoot, then 100's of bullets rain down). The scrapyard also has a silencer in the back of one of the abandoned trucks.

4) As soon as I get those, I run to Dark Valley and get the Warsaw-weapon Scope for helping Duty-member named 'Bullet'. I also know where the Mama's Beads artifact always is over there, so I grab that as well.

5) Go back to Garbage to complete the main quest stuff there, and soon you have an AK to put that scope on.

6) Once I reach Strelok's hideout, that scope goes on Streloks AK.

And here's my 2 favorite 'veteran' tricks ... I do these before ever heading back to Dark Valley to 'meet' Borov:

7) Once I reach the Bar in Rostok and get the X18 mission, I head immediately to the Army Warehouse/Freedom Base to the north and grab the Vintar BC laying in the barracks, along with it's bullet cache in the ceiling directly above where the gun is found. I won't go into details about how I handle the Duty guys at the farm house, but suffice to say ... I make them and Freedom fight, but I don't shoot anyone myself. I just 'clean up' the loot after the fight. This way I remain neutral and get the best of both worlds.

8) I then return south back to Rostok, and immediately embark to the Wild Territories (WT). I save Kruglov, then escort him all the way to the Yantar bunker, where I then sell off or store random crap (Iike extra artifacts I'll sell to the scientist later, as he gives the best prices after you clear X-16).

9) I then turn around and head back through WT to Rostok. This action triggers the Mercs on the roof of the Construction Site to have NATO scopes on their TRS301's when I return back through (which they will not if you never click through to Yantar map). This is the MAIN reason I take this detour to Yantar at this point of the game.

So now I have a Scoped TRS-301 (and the earlier-found silencer also fits it) to go with my Vintar BC (though ammo is somewhat scarce for that gun at this point so I CONSERVE), and I'm a killing MACHINE, BABY!

Notes on the trek through WT's: If you studiously check all corpses you'll find or create in your sojourn from WT to Yantar and back, you will find one Zombified Stalker corpse that provides a stash marker in the WT Train Station ... this stash contains a SEVA suit, one of games best armors.

Also, you should get the 'Family Rifle' quest from the dude at the Bar before heading to WT's, as there's some cool loot (and the corpse of teh Freeman, along with an iconic weapon) right around where that rifle is found ... Note that it's underground wink.gif

I also hang out in WT on the way back from Yantar, and kill fools until I get the stash marker at the WT motor pool, as this one contains a grenade launcher for the TRS-301 (an accessory that can also be found locked/guarded at the Freedom base, but I don't like to fight those guys, so I prefer to get it from the WT stash). This will come off some random merc in WT's itself, but it varies where you find the dude that has that stash marker, so sometimes I end up dicking around in WT's just killing everyone till I get it.

So, Scoped/Silenced TRS301 w/Launcher, and Vintar BC ... those are the two weapons I carry back down to the Dark Valley to meet up with my buddy Borov, wearing my badass SEVA w/night vision (admittedly this makes you overpowered, but it's not cheating ... it's just the benefit of having played teh game before wink.gif) ... and those are my weapons until I reach CNPP.

Once there, I switch to the FN2000 and Gauss, but still keep the Vintar for fun and cause I LOVE that gun.

No other weapons in this game really interest me, aside from I sometimes pick up a Chaser when heading to Snork infested lands, or a Tunder so I can fire off grenades using it's built-in launcher. Oh, and I sometimes carry a GP37 at certain points cuz it's a sweet weapon also.

Vintar BC aka Vintorez ... in single shot mode, and shooting from a crouched position ... one of the funnest guns in video game history.

hmm, great game SoC is by far the best, it has the most charm to it out of the three.

Conserve? what? seriously, I played on the level above Stalker difficulty and almost never ran out of ammo. there's oodles of it, just switch to the gun everyone is using in that area....never play with just one gun.

The best thing about SoC when it first came out were the unique weapons. No one knew where the attachments were and only special guns had some upgrades.
A few stalkers would carry modified weapons like high powered rifles with a silencer that was not normally available, pistols with chamber upgrades and some with silencers, plus more. Finding that stash with Fang's exo suit that had the high end night vision was a thrill.

It was a thrill to find that Friend stalker dead in some corner with that Unique rifle, and then you take it as yours... "sorry stalker'!

I always think CS and CoP ruined that experience with the upgrade system, but repairs were a blessing for keeping the gear you wanted.

Yeah, that was a very cool aspect of SoC when it came out.

I remember the Exo you're talking about. I didn't get it until like my 5th playthrough.

IIRC, to get it, you have to do things in a certain way ... DON'T wipe out Freedom, but rather, you have to complete the missions Lukash gives you until you get the one to "Kill the Stalker" or something like that. That Stalker is all the way over in Yantar, near where you and Kruglov take your emissions readings.

If you complete that quest, one of the bodies of the dudes in the Stalker's crew has the stash marker for that Exo ... although you don't find it until you get all the way to Pripyat.

I think that stash also has a Mama's Beads, so it's a pretty worthwhile mission to complete. Although the lack of sprinting ability in the Exo makes it a drag for the beginning of CNPP level ... I tend to REALLY wanna run during that sequence ... thus, I usually head to CNPP wearing the suit from the Pripyat hotel room wink.gif

^ that is funny that you actually know how to get Fang's suit. I found it on my first playthrough and only then. I can't quite remember but I think I carried the exo until I got into the CNPP. Sadly I took so much damage I had to drop it for the exo you find inside the CNPP. I was so bummed.

Yeah ... I'm a HUGE SoC geek ... played it SOOO many times.

Are you talking about the Exo in the 'basement' near the start of the indoor part of CNPP? There's so much rad down there, and the exo is so heavy ... it's really easy to die just trying to get that suit.

I like to buy the SKAT from Barkeep prior to heading to the Scorcher. I wear that, but also carry the green scientist suit, until I finish playing around in Pripyat and am ready to head to CNPP. Then I grab the decoder and fresh SKAT from the Pripyat Hotel Room, but I just wear that SKAT till I hit indoors at CNPP. Then I drop it and put on the green suit to protect from the Rads and get the good night vision cause it's pretty dark and irradiated down there (funny, that). Oh ... and then there's EEDI KO MNE!

I wear the green suit 'til find the SKAT near the Control Room, then drop the (inevitably torn up) green suit and rock that suit throughout the whole 'real ending' stretch.

That's my late-game armor method. I really hate not being able to run so don't bother with Exo's anymore.
