Piracy

The Void was noted in Russia for its developers' reaction to piracy. When the game appeared on the largest Russian torrents.ru tracker, the developers talked to the downloaders in the thread, answered game related questions and encouraged them to buy the game, if they liked it. Also, the developers made an official torrent containing all bonus material from the gift edition.[11]

Piracy helps, more than it hurts. However, Publishers aren't smart enough to see it as a whole yet.

Don't lock the thread, but im one who pirates a game first and will then buy it if worth while. I purchased balckops and hated it to death. i'm out $60. I don't think it's fair to have a game for $60 and then have no refund policy. I understand the issues. but back to this topic exclusively... I think they are saying most of their "piracy" is coming from unlicensed swag, as opposed to paying for the lawyers to shut them down they see the value of having these plush toys floating around the world. and because there is no official licencing fee the units are able to be sold cheaper, there fore more units will probably be sold. really the only guy who gets hurt here is the manufacturer who is actually playing by the rules and paying the licencing fee and having to charge the higher prices for the same units.

Im not so convinced it's actual software they are concerned about. in most cases these companies would rather you use the free ad driven version as they have reoccurring income from the ads as opposed to the one time payment of purchasing the game or software.

Piracy helps, more than it hurts. However, Publishers aren't smart enough to see it as a whole yet.

I think they see it and feel like they've still lost money since they paid all the lawyers to make the legal arrangements for the product before and then paid them to get ready to go after everyone. See...they've lost money. rolleyes.gif

As always...when you make it inconvenient in the slightest for a paying customer to get what they want (I SAID PAYING) then they will search out the cheapest alternative that does. IE a customer wants to pay for a single song in FLAC...but all that's available is MP3/or AAC. Customer wants to watch a movie on any device without multiple trailers/warning/difficulty/time wasted converting/ripping(legal)....but all they get is low quality streams(if they can get streams from a legal source) or have to deal with doing those things themselves to a bluray(and paying more).

PIRACY IS MOSTLY A SERVICE PROBLEM! -Paraphrased from Gabe Newell

considering the dudes basically stole their game idea from already existing catapult type flash games, only replacing the characters with birds and pigs, I'm not surprised at all they're defending piracy
