Strange behavior from my X-Fi

It's my understanding that the correct way to configure the X-Fi under Windows 7 for games is to set the windows sound configuration in the control panel to 7.1 and the creative control panel to your actual configuration (such as headphones), but these two settings seem to remain in sync, changing to the windows control panel are reflected in the creative control panel and vise versa. Does anyone else's card behave like this? What are non OpenAL games "seeing"? TF2 for example can be set to 7.1 but a lot of Fmod games don't have speaker configurations. Not sure if this is a problem or not.

It doesn't matter what windows' audio panel says. go by the x-fi control panel. Set the in game options to 7.1 but make sure you are using headphone on the x-fi control panel.

Does anyone else's card behave this way? I'm making this big a deal about it because creative tells you to set these two things differently.
