First download AMD Overdrive: http://sites.amd.com/us/game/downloads/amd-overdrive/pages/overview.aspx
Once AOD is installed, open and go to clock\voltage.
increase the CPU VID to 1.375v
increase the CPU multiplier on all cores in half steps.
Use 3Dmark06 as a preliminary Stability test.
Then once you reach a frequency that you like run Prime95: http://files.extremeoverclocking.com/file.php?f=103
Do so for at least 6 hours preferably 12 hrs.
More voltage may be necessary if so you must edit voltage in the BIOS.
Once you get a good OC put these changes into the BIOS as AOD will reset every time you restart, this helps for testing as if you crash it will reboot fine.

I would recommend using the bios to do any overclocking because in the long run it's easier and you will have a ton more options to tweak things. Plus with the Sabertooth you can have profiles so you can save up to ten? profiles for overclocking. AMD overdrive works well for monitoring but it isn't quite accurate for some things like the bios is.

For stress testing I would use either OCCT, Prime95 or Intel burn test. IBT is a good one for a quick ~2 minute test to see if it's moderately stable and then use OCCT (my favorite), or Prime95 to run a full stability test for 24/7 use.

Read the entire Bulldozer/FX Owner's thread to start learning the basics of OC'ing the FX CPUs which are a little different than other CPU models. Take your time and learn. Overclocking takes a LOT of time and patience to do it properly. Overclocking is a Journey NOT a destination.

so did bulldozer ever catch up with tuban in single threaded app performance?

No. FX is weak on single thread but much better on heavy threading. Either CPU works well for all general PC use and gaming. In the right apps the FX is noticeably better.

Thanks. I have another question: Do I need to change the voltage on the motherboard and RAM if I overclock it????

It depends on the RAM/mobo/CPU and how much you are trying to OC. In general most DDR3 RAM requires an increase in voltage to ~1.65v to achieve it's maximum OC, if the default RAM voltage is the industry standard 1.5v.
