Jump from i3 2100 - i5 2500?

Thread Starter
I have been doing some SERIOUS video editing and some audio editing recently and it looks like it isn't going to let up. I found that my render times are just too long for my taste. Would upgrading to the i5 2500 down my render time that much? (I have a crappy motherboard, no reason to buy the xxxxK model)

Here are my other specs:

  • x2 1TB Samsung Spintpoint F3 7200RPM
  • 8GB DDR3 RAM 1333
  • 535w PSU
  • GTX 460

I've read that more cores is good for rendering, so yes you should see a difference. How noticeable, that I'm sure of. tongue.gif

The 2600 is superior in rendering, mostly because of HT.

It will depend on the software you are using and how well its performance scales with the number of CPU cores.

2600k is up to 50% faster in rendering. Also the Asus P8P67-M (3.0) is not a bad motherboard, or at least that is stated in your sig. You will be able to overclock pretty high on it.

i3-2100 with 2 cores/4 threads VS. i5-2500 with 4 cores/4 threads. Probably not that much difference except if you get the 2500k and overclock it. But i3-2100 vs. i7-2600, that's where you'd notice the difference. Get the 2600k, overclock it a little and enjoy your rendering times.

Yes, a quad core would be better for rendering. If it was just for gaming, it wouldn't be worth it, but if you're doing 3d rendering, the upgrade is worth the investment.

i3 to i5 is like from Skoda to Volkswagen.
i3 to i7 would be like Skoda to Lamborghini.

I vote for 2600K or 2600S or what ever. 4 core with 4 threads.
