OC 950 help

Thread Starter
I moved here for OC help hope thats OK from Intel general. I have been getting some hard knocks here. From this post you can see my 570 died.

http://www.overclock.net/t/1204008/i-am-trying-again-i-have-4-0-oc-need-help/20#post_16331958

Evga is great though. I picked up a cheap 8400 while waiting for an RMA. I have been having some heat issues. But believe I have them under control from improper fan mounting. Please look at my latest screen shot. I am kinda gun shy to do any more. Prime ran for about 20 min and I bumped my cpu vlt , qpi/dram vlt , and cpu/pll . As I was getting warning from the asus AI. It seem to be stabalizing when I started gettng ICH vlt warning 00000. Any suggestions. This is my best OC yet and I am wimping out trying to hold it here or back it down. headscratch.gif

Back that QPI voltaged down, way down. You shouldnt need over 1.2v on your QPI voltage unless your running 2000mhz ram. Then set your vcore to 1.375v and disable LLC. That should get you a more stable overclock, having qpi voltage that high would start to cause you issues on air cooling

Also if you have a multimetre put the probes in the end of a free molex (on the 12v and earth) and run prime 95, see if the supplied voltage dropps below 12v. 650w is enough to run your setup but might be starting to push at keeping the 12v rail above 12v.

I dont have a multi meter but I feel good about this PSU, do you think its getting pushed to much? I will try and get one to test it though. I brought my qpi down to 1,25 an vcore 1.375 Thanks so much thumb.gif I will run prime again and see what happens.
LLC are you talking about load line calibration?

double check your dram voltage. normally tri-channels run at 1.65v. not sure of the specs for your particular rams.

These puppies are like 1.5 or so. They are a little difficult to get tuned out but seem good enough . At 1400. I have done some more adjusting trying to get this thing stable as I am running prime and get the heat down some more. Heres another screen shot of whats going on now. Thanks guys for the help. I am no expert OCer I am very happy to be getting closer to a stable 4.2 OC . There is so much I just don't know. I should be flying again when I get my 570 back in here. Wouldnt ya know Ivey bridge is almost here rolleyes.gif

It seems to be liking these settings better.

also need to be careful with i7 900 series, there is a fine line with the VTT voltage (QPI in your case), too high and youll fry your IMC pretty fast especially on air cooling, and when that happens youll be looking at a new processor. even with 1.5v triple channel kits i would recommend running them at 1.65v when overclocking the processor just to help keep then stable and rule out any instability you might run into.

also a multimeter is a really useful tool when your overclocking because the Vcore you set is almost never what is actually being used. not only that but it can help get a good idea on what everything is drawing. a i7 950 could draw up to 300W on its own at 4.5ghz, i would think that your power supply might be getting up to 70-80% of its usage and the voltage could start to droop. its just some good information to know when your overclocking.

this OCing is an art. It takes alot of knowledge I havent nor still do possess. I will be buying a multimeter. And perhaps I should have bought a 750 psu. I started getting IOH and warning and then qpi .I had it up to 4.2 took it back down to 4.1. Thought I would give it a break for a little and try it again. I have 4.2 as my goal to run 24/7 if I can just get the right tweaks. I think that is as high as I need to go on air with this cpu. You are much help everyone.

Some chips cant even do over 4ghz, so 4.1ghz is a pretty good achievement for air cooling.
