post #1 of 23

This is in ADA, but after I input my information it will spit out a bunch of non related garbage and I have getting kind of frustrated as I have been trying to fix this for the past 2 hours.

Picture of problem:

363

Program code:
Code:
with Ada.Text_IO;
with Ada.Float_Text_IO;

procedure bob is

-- This program computes miles per gallon given four amounts
-- for gallons used, and starting and ending mileages

   -- Variables

   Amt1 : Float; -- Number of gallons for fillup 1
   Amt2 : Float; -- Number of gallons for fillup 2
   Amt3 : Float; -- Number of gallons for fillup 3
   Amt4 : Float; -- Number of gallons for fillup 4

   Car_Make   : String (1 .. 20); -- Car make
   Model_Year : String (1910 .. 2011); -- Model year
   Last       : Integer range 0 .. 20;
   Final      : Integer range 1910 .. 2011;

   Start_Miles : Float;  -- Starting mileage
   End_Miles   : Float;  -- Ending mileage

   -- Variables

   MPG : Float range 4.0 .. 100.0;              -- Computed miles per gallon

begin     -- Mileage
   Ada.Text_IO.Put (Item => "Model year: ");
   Ada.Text_IO.New_Line (Spacing => 1);
   Ada.Text_IO.Get_Line (Item => Model_Year, Last => Final);
   Ada.Text_IO.New_Line (Spacing => 1);
   Ada.Text_IO.Put (Item => "Car make: ");
   Ada.Text_IO.New_Line (Spacing => 1);
   Ada.Text_IO.Get_Line (Item => Car_Make, Last => Last);
   Ada.Text_IO.New_Line (Spacing => 1);
   Ada.Text_IO.Put (Item => "For the gallon amounts: ");
   Ada.Text_IO.New_Line (Spacing => 1);
   Ada.Float_Text_IO.Get (Item => Amt1);
   Ada.Float_Text_IO.Get (Item => Amt2);
   Ada.Float_Text_IO.Get (Item => Amt3);
   Ada.Float_Text_IO.Get (Item => Amt4);
   Ada.Text_IO.New_Line (Spacing => 2);
   Ada.Text_IO.Put  (Item => "a starting mileage of ");
   Ada.Float_Text_IO.Get (Item => Start_Miles);
   Ada.Text_IO.New_Line (Spacing => 1);
   Ada.Text_IO.Put (Item => "and an ending mileage of ");
   Ada.Float_Text_IO.Get (Item => End_Miles);
   Ada.Text_IO.New_Line (Spacing => 2);
   MPG := Float ((End_Miles - Start_Miles) / (Amt1 + Amt2 + Amt3 + Amt4));
   Ada.Text_IO.Put (Item => "Your ");
   Ada.Text_IO.Put (Item => Model_Year);
   Ada.Text_IO.Put (Item => Car_Make);
   Ada.Text_IO.Put (Item => " got ");
   Ada.Float_Text_IO.Put (Item => MPG);
   Ada.Text_IO.Put (Item => " miles per gallon.");
   Ada.Text_IO.New_Line (Spacing => 1);

end bob;

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

it appears only the strings are way out of wack.... may i ask why your not doing this is java or c?
post #3 of 23
not initializing your floats to zero or the issue is converting floats to a string. why aren't you just using doubles? what onions said.

edit:note I've never worked with ADA but it seems this would be done very simply in C or java.

edit 2: just saw that it does seem to be the strings being entered only not the floats

I see. Well it seems I may not be able to help as it seems to be an issue with inputting and outputting strings with ADA. It does look like the garbage that gets used if you don't initialize a variable tho. But I have no clue how ADA deals with strings. Hopefully someone else can help.

On a side note what kind of class is this for?

have you tried testing output using the ascii table it looks like its converting the strings into a number system then not properly traslating them back... it could be an encryption key in your registry thats preventing it. try just printing a hard coded message then a message input by a user straight up.

Intro to computing.

seems extremely complicated for an intro to computing class especially since it doesn't seem to be a mainstream language
