Unlocking the 960T on that mobo will not "fry" the board, since it features ASUS' trademark VRM protection feature which throttles the CPU to prevent the MOSFETs from overheating. An unlock would raise the TDP rating of the chip to 125W which is significantly above the board's qualified rating of 95W. If you HAVE to run it as a 6-core, then your best bet would be to leave it on stock speeds and get your hands on some VRM cooling (I have the same board and have ghetto-tied an 80mm fan over the VRMs). However, you will likely run into performance issues while the sytem is under load since the board will throttle the CPU to prevent overheating. I'd advice you to leave it locked till you get a new board.
