2-3 way crossfire question

Thread Starter
currently i am running 2x 6950`s in crossfire, with a z68 chipset board. I hahve heard different things from people saying that i should not do 3 way crossfire because z68 or p67 is not good for more then 2, however i have a motherboard which supports it, therefore i am a tad confused.

I have teh power supply and everything, all i need is a third card, i just want to know if im going to run into any problems, or anything with 3 way crossfire.

currently one is an asus card, and one xfx, i was plannig on adding a msi twin frozr, and they are all 1gb cards, i hope mixing all 3 brands wont cause problems either.

thanks!

There is not issues with running 3way crossfire or sli on your board, it just comes down to the amount of pci-e lanes, if you run 3 way crossfire or sli then you would have two cards running on 8x and the 3rd on 4x. The one on 4x will not improve performance much at all. Only way around this is to get a board that has a NF200 chip installed to add more pci-e lanes

Mixing brands wont matter, and sure you can 3 way CFX them, only with 3 way scaling, i can only think of 2 or 3 games that will take advantage of more that 2 GPUS like that... say Metro 2033, BF3... Crysis 2.... COD doesnt really give good scaling... nor does TF2... and the reason people say dont tri or quadfire with Z68 is only because you get less bandwidth... such as this... 1 Video card you get full x16 PCI badwidth for 1 card, now in CFX 2 way, you have to split it 8x and 8x... now 3 way will break it down to 4x 4x and 4x.... see the conundrum? now there is a LinusTechTips Episode on this.. there for if i were your and really wanted to do this.. sure thing! 5870s are cheap now anyways go right ahead... if i had a better PSU i would throw my old 5830 on and 3 way CFx as well! honestly... 4x is not that noticeable of a scaling difference from 8x or 16x..

i believe there is an nf200 chip or whatever installed on my board. for my setup when i run 2 cards in x fire it runs in 16x, 16x, and i believe that if i choose to run three cards, it would be 16x,8x,8x, which i don't think would be that bad. i know its not needed to have three cards, but its one of those things that it would be nice to have since i already have everything else i need in there wink.gif

Your board can do 2 @x16/16,  4 @x8/x8/x8/x8 and 3 @x16/x8/x8.

If resolution you play is not Eyefinity or higher than 2560x1600, it should be fine to run @x16/x8/x8.

No it cannot do 16x 16x, read up on how the NF200 Chip works, it doesnt magically ad bandwidth thumb.gif

Ok, this is confusing me. I've got 3x6970's on a P67A-UD7. Have been running 1920x1080 until now but just bought 2 more 24" to run Eyefinity (5760x1080).
If i'm not mistaken the UD7 has a NF200 so will it work fine @ 5760x1080 ?

Thanks.

If you wish to educate me from your own personal experince with nF200 chips, please do. I would apreciate it thumb.gif

I am too afraid to read what people wrote or in reviews (assuming they wrote facts not opninions), because without basics and proper understanding, I might get lost in translation oneeyedsmiley02.png

P67A-UD7 has 4 PCIe x16 slots via nF200.

3 cards will run @16/x8/x8. You can alway try to overclock the CPU if you experience stuttering.

Have a look here; Weird Eyefinity stuttering issues. Please help!

Quote:

  • 2 x PCI Express x16 slots, running at x16 (PCIEX16_1, PCIEX16_2)
    * For optimum performance, if only one PCI Express graphics card is to be installed, be sure to install it in the PCIEX16_1 slot; if you are installing two PCI Express graphics cards, it is recommended that you install them in the PCIEX16_1 and PCIEX16_2 slots.

  • 2 x PCI Express x16 slots, running at x8 (PCIEX8_1, PCIEX8_2)
    * The PCIEX8_1 slot shares bandwidth with the PCIEX16_1 slot and the PCIEX8_2 slot with PCIEX16_2. The PCIEX16_1/PCIEX16_2 slot will operate at up to x8 mode when the PCIEX8_1/PCIEX8_2 is populated

Ok, I see now that Gpu-z is reporting 16/8/8 so i guess i have to see tomorrow when i get the two new monitors. Cpu is running @ 4.6Ghz.

NF200 essentially is splitting PCI-E loads its usually used on Dual GPU cards like the GTX 590 and replaces the old NF100 Chip on the GTX 295, Nvidia tried to market it to Board partners, but honestly it didnt make a difference, ANYWAYS... did nobody watch teh youtube link? 4x has almost next to no difference compared to 8x and 16x which are differentiated only by like 1FPS... and that is probably only due to latency of the boards BUS
