Please help! i5-2500 build with ASRock motherboard

Thread Starter
This is my setup

ASRock extreme3 gen3 motherboard
intel core i5-2500 processor
8gb G.Skill ddr3 1600 RAM with 9-9-9-24 timing
Samsung dvd burner
OCZ 700w power supply
my heatsink and fan is the stock with i5

My problem is this:

After finally getting a power supply that works, (old one was DOA), I was able to boot the computer. But when I was navigating my new EFI BIOS on my nice new computer, I came across the temp monitoring and saw that my CPU temp was over 80 Celcius and climbing. I've had a pentium 4 water cooled system (which I'm selling) and that never went over 30 celcius. Even though it's only on air, this still doesn't seem right. So i checked the heatsink and fan and the fan is running and the heatsink is securely on there. I don't have a probe so it was the motherboard's temp sensor built in.

What could be causing this overheating?

Please help, I'd like to get my computer running biggrin.gif

recheck the push-pins... make sure none of the little white anchors got turned sideways

Mine reports it a bit higher than in windows.. but not that high. Did you slip at all when putting the heatsink on? I say just reseat it and see.

Out of curiosity, 2500 or 2500k?

Yeah, I think its the heatsink. Make sure the heatsink is in full contact and mounted and that you didn't forget thermal paste

but seriously. reseat the heatsink.

I don't think your pins are sat right. Like everyone else said, make sure the 4 pins are fully in the holes then push the pins in. Remove old thermal paste and put new

All of you guys rock!!! This is only my second build after that pentium i mentioned. I took the heatsink out and pushed it back in, and after 2 minutes of running in BIOS, it is saying 48.5. It started at 40 and rose to that but it seems to have stabilized there. I really appreciate your help, all of you.

And to those who asked, its the regular. I know this OCN but i got 25 off on the 2500 and was low on cash. It was a deal that I haven't seen before. And the 2500k is already at $230 on newegg. Its getting insane.
