AMD stated over a month ago that the 7950 would launch with different designs from AIB's (like the hd6850).

Seems like nobody is using the better of the 2 OEM designs then. Not really surprising, since the reference design in most of these reviews is based on the 7970, and must therefore be more expensive to produce than the ones we're seeing on newegg, with the cheap aluminum heatsinks.

Comparison of the "cheaper" 7950 reference heatsink compared to the 7970's:

Considering those "cheap" heatsinks can still overclock well while staying cool, I'm sure some people won't mind.

Still, I expected a better reference heatsink on a $450-500 graphics card. Instead all we get is a cheap block of aluminum on the reference designs, and no VRM cooling.

Honestly, I think AMD's just taking advantage over their throne and is price gouging. There's no way these cards cost remotely close to what they're selling for.

No, HD 7950 > 580 from what I'm seeing, at least most of the time.
