As far as vRAM amount goes - in my experience 1 Gb is adequate up to about 6 megapixels with AA turned off. At 10 megapixels screen resolution the 1 Gb of vRAM is blatantly inadequate even with AA off and you have to start "saving RAM" in other ways by giving up on texture sizes, tuning down shaders a bit, etc.

Single HD screen (1920x1080 resolution) is roughly 2 megapixels.

Having AA on can eat up a lot of vRAM, depending on the AA type. So it's entirely possible, that you can run out of vRAM on a simple 1920x1080 screen with high AA levels if you have 1 Gb of vRAM. However, I must also point out, that if one is sitting on adequate distance from their screen they do not actually need AA. For example, sitting 75 cm away from a 23'' 1920x1080 screen a human with 20/20 vision can no longer see the individual pixels and thus can not differentiate between no AA, 2x AA, etc. The point of AA is to make low resolution screen look like it would have higher resolution than it actually has.

It also depends ofc on games you play. Some games have larger texture packs than others and thus might be bottlenecked by the vRAM amounts at lower resolutions than is my experience. I have no experience on Battlefield 3 so cant comment on that particular game.

My comment is based on running different Eyefinity resolutions with a 1 Gb vRAM card. 3x1 1920x1080 screens are about 6 megapixels and 5x1 1920x1080 screens are about 10 megapixels. I sit far enough from my screens to run with AA off.

The 3GB definetely does help with some games in Eyefinity, and especially with CF configs. I've noticed games like Crysis 2, BF3, Shogun II and texture modded Skyrim employ +2GB VRAM constantly. How much of a performance difference it makes compared to a 2 GB card is hard to say though. IMO the games reserve more memory than what they actually need to keep the performance. By looking at reviews it seems like there's only a small performance difference between different memory sizes up until a point where the game properly runs out of VRAM and FPS completely tanks to a slide show. This might be specific to a game though and how it handles the memory. For example I could not run BF3 at Ultra in Eyefinity with a 6950CF while 7970 ran it fairly smooth, even though it's otherwise slightly weaker. It looked like the game needed 2-2.5GB of VRAM for 4xAA at 5760x1080, and 2GB 6950CF just wasn't enough. It didn't tank the FPS, but it was still considerably slower, <20 FPS while 7970 OC was around 30 FPS.

I have considerably weaker setup than 6950 as I'm running 2x6770's crossfired (actually the second card is Sapphire 5770 which I have flashed to 6770, even tho you can CF 5770 and 6770 as well). For me, when I run out of vRAM the performance drop is very noticeable, as I go from about 30 fps average straight into 5-10 fps range when the GFX card starts using the regular RAM.

In practice the amount of vRAM I have available is probably a bit over 1 Gb bcos of the way how crossfire + eyefinity setups are supposed to work. Both cards hold textures in their local memory but for rendering the crossfired cards switch into supertiled rendering mode when one is running eyefinity dividing the screen estate into a 32x32 pixels squares. So some amount of vRAM could be considered effectively added. So dunno - perhaps something like "effective" 1,2 Gb of vRAM or something like that. Take this section with grain of salt, however, as I have been unable to find official documentation on how exactly the CF+Eyefinity works even after digging thru several officially available whitepapers about this. The claim is based on forum post by some guy in TechPowerUp forums who seemed to know whats hes talking about.

I think these 7950 cards are really nice from a power consumpiton/performance ratio point of view, which also implies a good heat/performance ratio. That was perhaps to be expected because of a smaller 28nm process, but it doesn't always happen like this (fx?). I'll wait for the 7800 series as i'm only using one 1920x1080 display, and i find bigger cards are overpowered for that. Btw, does anyone know what's the latest news on the 7890 or 7930 card?

It is still unknown, only data we have is that it doesn't work by simply flashing a 7970 BIOS, but it might work with a custom 7950 one, or the cores are laser cut off.

Same here.

Need to replace my Sapphire 4870 VaporX due to the fact that i play on a 27" now...

I did find the MSI 7950 Card around the same price the 7870 is,so i was wondering if I should get it...
It*s not the TwinFrzr Card,it*s the black/red One(ref-design).

Is it still worth getting it over the Sapphire 7870?

Reference is reference, just with different stickers on them and different warranties.

Get a Sapphire HD 7950 OC edition or Gigabyte HD 7950 OC Windforce. These are binned to reach higher speeds. These can easily do 1050 on stock volts. they can reach 1200 with extra voltage. Don't buy the ref design at 800 Mhz.
