Which will play BF3 on Ultra settings...

Thread Starter
I am looking to upgrade my Gpu in a week and I am having a hard time deciding on a new gpu to play BF3 on ultra @1920x1200. I currently have a 560ti which can play on ultra at like 20-24fps on average which is not to my standards.

I was thinking of this
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130751

Or
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102961&cm_sp=Cat_Video_Cards_%26%2338%3b_Video_Devices-_-New-_-14-102-961

My main goal is to hit 60fps with Vsync enabled and smooth gameplay. My big concern with the 7970 is the driver issues and the fact the card is so new and still might have some bugs to work out.

I don't want to wait until kepler...

Please suggest me some GPU's and your reasons why you would choose it and if you have benchmarks that will help too..thumb.gif

The 7970 should be fine.

I would go with 7970, but mostly anything with like 2GB vram would play in Ultra settings at 1080p.

Which 7970 card would be the best since I know nothing about AMD cards?

I just checked a few reviews and my feeling is that both can just give an ave 60fps for BF3 Ultra at 1920x1200 when they are overclocked moderately.

For examples,

http://www.anandtech.com/show/5261/amd-radeon-hd-7970-review/22

http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/graphics/2011/12/22/amd-radeon-hd-7970-3gb-review/5

http://www.hardwareheaven.com/reviews/1361/pg6/amd-radeon-hd-7970-graphics-card-review-battlefield-3.html

So, if you want a rock solid 60fps comfortably, perhaps consider a dual GPU solution, either a dual GPU card or a SLI/CF setup.

And, the PSU GS600 needs to be upgraded as well.

Well the GTX 580 3GB Ultra is a sweet card with 14+3 phase PWM's with a 1000Mhz core clock OC it can easily achieve your mark.

However the 7970 is priced just a tad higher but yields much better performance. The winner here would be the AMD 7970. biggrin.gif

If pricing dropped on the GTX 580 3GB Ultra then price / performance would sway but not likely to happen. IF your not waiting till Kepler the Sapphire 7970 is a solid choice.

Out of the reference 7970's I would go with Sapphire, ASUS, or MSI.

When more of the non-reference 7970's come out I'd wait for the MSI Lightning or the Sapphire Toxic versions in another couple months.

The reference 7970 is getting a 200Mhz over clock on air average. Some hitting 1300Mhz while others as low as 1125Mhz Core clock average. Very nice performance bump. smile.gif

a 7970 would be the better option. you'd easily get 60fps with an overclock and AA/ambient occlusion disabled.
