AS SSD Question

Thread Starter
What does the 31K - BAD mean when I run AS SSD?

It shows up regardless of which drive I select (I am running 2 different ocz agility SSDs). also, why do i get "can access physical drive" when it tries to run the read access time test (again...both drives)

thanks for any help

That is because your alignment is bad. You have 3 options atm.

  1. Make sure your AS SSD is up to date, if it is and it still shows that you need to do one of the following.
  2. Reinstall the OS using my install guide: http://www.overclock.net/t/1156654/seans-windows-7-install-guide-optimization-for-ssds-hdds
  3. Or pay $30 for this program: http://www.paragon-software.com/home/partition-alignment/

thanks for the reply sean. i thought i followed the pointers in your guide but i did have a failed install which caused me to start over (after a secure erase)

any chance that doing a secure erase and then migrating everything back onto the drive would help? did a little research and foudn this wont work

thanks again

oh...the 31k has me really confused. as ssd shows "amdsata - ok" and "31 k - bad for all my drives" ...even my sata hdd. is it calling out something with my drives or with my controller? confused i am

the version is 1.6.4237.30508 and the update selection doesnt find any updates. is this the newest?

thansk again

All your drives seem to be unaligned properly.

For the OS drive you need to reinstall, you cannot do a system restore to fix it even after properly aligning the partitions, at least my friend tried and couldn't. No need for a secure erase, just follow my install guide to the "T"

You need to format those drives and then restore the data to them after you align them right.

Do this to the secondary HDDs once you back up your data
  1. Open the Start Menu, type diskpart, press Enter
  2. Type list disk, press Enter
  3. Type select disk X (where X is the number your drive shows up as), press Enter
  4. Type clean, press Enter
  5. Type create partition primary, press Enter
  6. Type active, press Enter
  7. Type format quick fs=ntfs, press Enter
  8. Type assign, press Enter
  9. Type exit, press Enter

Baloney lol, honestly that is false from my knowledge. Doesn't matter how it is written. It will still be put on the SSD NAND cells as equally possible.

good to hear. saves a step if nothing else, but can it really be considered "bad?

to continue documenting my saga in hopes it may help someone else, this is what i have learned.

acronis migrate easy is a great/effective program, although it may not be necessary. it does make things easy when the time comes to do a secure erase to gain back the lost performance (is this still true? does a secure erase really still do this for you?)

the paragon alignment tool does work. although i did have a problem where it refused to align one of my drives (just happened to be my boot drive) because it kept finding file integrity errors that didnt really exist and would cancel the re-alignment before it even started. i found a few other cases where other peeps had the same problem and paragon suggested running chckdsk to make sure there were no errors and then running the alignment tool with the error checking function disabled. doing so resulted in all of my disks being realigned successfully.

now when i run as ssd i get the following:

499

and (compare this to the initial screenshot - same drive)

499

i still get the error that as ssd cannot open the physical drive (0 or 1) when it gets to the acc time read test, but from a quick search around the web, others are having the same issue and that it may be a problem with as ssd.

the numbers seem pretty decent considering these are ocz agility 3 drives and the performance is definitely a noticeable upgrade. so it appears that i have been successful with the realignment without having to reinstinstall (which is a good thing since i am on vista 64 and my disc is pre-sp1, which comes with its own set of install issues and mass updates), although it did come at a price (29.99 for pararagon alignment tool 3.0)

thanks again for your help sean...you remain the cornerstone of ssd information here on ocn.

Yes Secure Erasing does, i had used it a few times already to get back performance after heavy usage. smile.gif

Your writes will improve in a few days, don't worry about it. wink.gif

Yea, I am not sure why that happens, try different versions or something I think that fixed it for me before.
