An obvious one would to gather the icons of all the task bar and desktop icons into one folder or file with pointers to the programs and to blast them onto the desktop and task bar in a split second, instead of waiting for each program to load itself and offer its icon to the operating system. The registry has gotten so huge and so over-used far beyond its original purpose because (contrary to people's view of Bill Gates) microsoft has always had a narrow parochial vision of personal computing and is forever fighting with backward compatibility to point by point drag itself into the 21st century.
