Oh ok - I did see that one. You know for the non-reference two fan option that would be a better choice over the single reference middle fan.

I'd concur you will get some better cooling off that. Good call.....see you can do this. thumb.gif

Keep in mind at $500 your $60 from a 7970. tongue.gif

Can't say on it's over clocking yet as OCN members haven't had it in their hands yet. I'm sure will see it in a couple days. When you get your card, go over to *OFFICIAL* AMD Radeon HD 7950/7970 Owners Club and join up. They will steer you right on your OC when you get whichever you decide. smile.gif

I personally prefer Sapphire that's how I know. Never tried HIS as a dedicated AMD vendor but haven't heard of any horror stories from them like XFX.
Do not get the over clocked 7950. If your going to go with a 7950 GPU get the stock reference card and over clock it yourself. Personally it depends on your budget.
The 7950 on a single 1920x1200 monitor is right on par with a GTX 580 for $20 less if you would like to know what kind of performance to expect. Posted some benches from reviews here.
Sapphire comes with the most accessories and HIS comes with some nice extras as well.

I would not say on par, more like a good 10+% faster
Really the only game comes close is BF3, but overall game experience will be better on the 7950. I have play BF3 on a 1.5gb gtx580 and the card suffers from the same v-ram problems most people including me suffer from. While the game runs 60fps there is some times frame drops, for some users it happens all the time. Some people are lucky like me and only happens maybe once a match, but a little stutter for 2 sec isnt bugging me.

Is the HIS 7970 reference? I assume so, but I don't see AMD on the front of the PCB on the newegg pics

The HIS one is reference. All reference cards are the exact same. Sapphire you get some extra accessories but the HIS one gives you a weight lifter so it kind of evens out.

The HIS card itself is just as good as the Sapphire so if you're looking at getting a 7970 I say go for it. The PCB is black and identical to the Sapphire one which is also black, I actually bought a Sapphire one and an HIS one two days later due to Sapphire being out of stock at the time. thumb.gif

Taking the plunge now, with my $300 christmas newegg gift card and the free 2 day shipping with shop runner (got the 1 dollar deal a few days ago) it's only $249.99

DAMMIT! They just dropped the Sapphire OC one to $479.99 (was $499 which made stepping up to the HIS a little easier to justify

This review shows the OC version performing quite similarly with the OC 7970 in BF3 at 1080. Are they just comparing the Factory overclocked of both, or are they comparing a factory OC 7950 to a manually overclock 7970? Basically what I'm asking is will my HIS 7970 be better when overclocked than the 7970 reviewed here.
Did I make a bad choice?

The 7950 is @ 900Mhz is a 70Mhz OC.
The 7970 is @ 1000Mhz is a 75mhz OC.

The 7970 is known to OC avg 200Mhz over stock @ 1125Mhz and will out perform the 7950 at the end of an over clock day. 7950 is great and the 7970 is better.

You got what you paid for, why upset you got a better card?

Not upset so much. Just looking at the BF3 stats from the link I posted in my last post. It looks like the OC 7950 is just under the 7970 OC.

552

I just wasn't sure if they were running the 7970 at max or just running the factory clock.Upon further reading it looks like they were running it at 1000mhz

Just based off the pic above it didn't look like it was worth the extra $100 at least not at the clock they were testing at. However, I imagine since they are both the same core type, that with overclock the performance would be linear. So max 7970 would have roughly the same increase as max 7950.
