Asus Rampage IV Gene PCI Express slots speed

Thread Starter
I'll soon be getting an Asus Rampage IV Gene board. This board has dual PCI Express 16x slots. I plan on the following:

1st PCI Express 16x slot - EVGA GeForce GTX 580
2nd PCI Express 16x slot - LSI MegaRAID 9265-8i card

The LSI card demands an 8x PCI Express slot. Would plugging this into the 2nd PCI Express 16x slot in any way slow down the graphics card? I'm unsure if the slots were linked in any way.

Thanks.

Indeed. Not at all! The Ramage IV Gene could run 2 GPUs that card, and a sound card (or whatever) without even a hiccup. Socket 2011 processors have 40 pcie lanes dedicated to graphics, and 8 for accessories like usb and such like. The red 16x slots on the Gene are laid out with 16 lanes each on the top two, and 8 lanes on the bottom slot. The black x4 slot (#2) is run from the 8 accessory lanes if I recall correctly. thumb.gif

I thought so. I'll be putting an EVGA GTX 580 in the top slot, an LSI 9265-8i RAID controller in the next red slot, and a Creative X-Fi Titanium HD in the bottom red slot. Thanks all.

no the pci slots are the same type but they just have different names. the only time you would see a difference if you were using a 16x and a 8x slot

yea you got 40 PCi-E lanes for the slots, as long as you pick the right slots then you are fine, on that board you are good with both those slots.
