Hey everyone just curious on peoples opinions for a good laptop at the moment. It will mainly be used for university (Engineering and/or Commerce) but it will also be used for gaming tongue.gif Anyway I was recommended MacBook Pro by a lot of people? Opinions on this? Also if you know a great laptop could you please comment and tell me. Feel free to give reasons why etc.. Thanks biggrin.gif

you can get a gaming computer for that price, NEVER EVER BUY MAC FOR GAMING. If you intend to do gaming at all, no matter how crappy they are, they just won't run properly on mac. You can get a really good gaming laptop for that price...

Definitely not a MacBook or any Mac for gaming / engineer work. Many of the enginnering software in uni is windows only. This is coming from a person with a windows desktop and a Mac laptop. I personally think Macs are really lightweight os wise and not really a replacement for a windows, but more of a supplemental computer.

There's always boot camp on Mac but it just isn't the same. My recommendation although also shunned as much as Macs: an Alienware m15x; yeah you pay for name, but they are solid machines.

Haha thanks for the quick replying I will barely be doing gaming since I have my desktop so that's not the major issue. It's more for like what is best for uni. But if it's going to have trouble with software etc.. I'll have second thoughts. Can you recommend any good laptops for uni. I'm probably look at 13" or 15" because above 15 isn't so great for taking around etc..

1) give us a budget
2) what do you do with your laptop
3) what size laptop (screen res, screen size, weight)
4) battery life important? at least how much
5) any brands you dislike?
6) not that OC.net is bad, but come visit us at notebookreview.com (they have a larger community for laptops)

the problem with Macs is that they like to overheat when you start to do something intensive with them. And sure you have boot camp, but for me the only good thing about macs are their battery life... but once you bootcamp... their battery life goes down the drain because Windows is comparatively a battery hog (OSX is closer to linux than windows ever will be)

if you have a TON of money to spend and want the best 13", come grab a Sony Vaio Z. I'd maybe wait for Ivy Bridge though, although my Z11 from 2010 (arrandale) has served me well and I'm a CS major so I do some VM work on my laptop, Visual Studio and the like.

1) give us a budget - Doesn't really matter. I'll try to be under $2k but I'd go to $2.5k if I had to.
2) what do you do with your laptop - I'll be using it for uni, browsing, POSSIBLY some gaming but that's not important atm and just everyday things
3) what size laptop (screen res, screen size, weight) - 13-15.6" screen and weight shouldn't be too having because I will be carrying it around
4) battery life important? at least how much - As long as I can get xD
5) any brands you dislike? No not specifically

I vote for Sony Vaio SA.

13"
3.2 lbs
1600x900 res
FULL wattage CPU
AMD 6630M w/ switchable graphics (HD3000 on integrated)
~ 1" thin
backlit keyboard
optical drive (Blu-ray if you want)
and... if you want... SSDs in RAID0

you're not going to find another 13" that compares to it other than the Sony Vaio Z. Any other laptop will be missing something.

here's me comparing it to a ton of other 13" machines:

in reply to OP,

if you're looking for something with discrete graphics, 13", 900p or higher display and under 4 lbs, there's not much.

There are the Acer timeline series with their beefy GPUs but, i question acer build quality and their displays are 720p only

Thinkpads, but only intel integrated (as stated above) and 720p

Toshiba Protege laptop, but again only intel integrated and 720p

13" MBP: integrated graphics 720p (albeit it's 16:10)
13" MBA: integrated graphics, LV CPU, 900p screen though!

Samsung Series 9: integrated graphics and i believe LV CPU...

Did i forget anything else? The only thing that comes close to your Z1... is the Vaio SA... or Z2... so... sorry!

edit2: Also there's the Asus Zenbook, but ULV, no backlit keyboard, but 1600x900 display

The Vaio Z + 1080p upgrade is a very nice option (but can you handle 1080p on a 13" display???)... on a side note, sad to say that the Vaio Z won't be the only small screen with 1080p for long... since Asus and Acer have announce tablets with 1080p and even 1200p panels... so sad... I want my next laptop to have 2560x1600 tongue.gif

edit3: where are you located OP, that'll help us also to determine your options.
