When does AT&T start throttling your unlimited data plan?

Thread Starter
I know it;s the top 5%, but at how many GB do they throttle YOU? I have heard 2GB, 5GB, and even 10GB before you go to dialup. I am thinking of doing the iPhone 2G unlimited loop hole but I don't think I will if they throttled me at just 2GB tongue.gif

Weird that I was able to do it like a week ago then isn't it. tongue.gif although you are somewhat correct it's a pain now. Lots of resets because the servers are bad mode now it's not entirely closed.

Edit: as of 1/21 it's 100% over I just checked and tried it. I did it on the like 17th and it worked. frown.gif

Thanks for editting to the correct so the OP knows what to expect with the iphone 2g trick.

I read a couple months ago that they closed the loop hole. But apparently you could still get it if you raised enough hell. But It is now completely closed as you have pointed out.

I got the text at 2.4gb. It was the first time I've ever gotten that text.

I've gone up to 6gb and never gotten a text. I think they're trying to scare me into one of their new price schemes. Sorry AT&T, I'm not giving up my unlimited plan.

I have no idea, but for the past two months I've got 6.9 and 7.4GB respectively without any throttling. The month of January was a measly 1.8GB though. February should be higher as I'll be streaming radio and downloading more tv shows...

I'm not really sure there's any rhyme to reason, it seems almost random. Why random? A friend of mine on his Atrix 4G hit 5.2GB in December [according to the online monitoring thing ATT provides] and he got the throttling message.... the same month I went 7.4GB without any throttling on my iPhone 4S. Go figure.

Right after you get the service with them smile.gif

In a serious note they are always slowing down your service time to time. I hated that with DSL...

the only time i even got a warning was when i used 24gb of data. heres the story: I was at an airport in providence and getting ready to go to florida. we got this gnarly snow storm and i had a layover. we had to camp in the airport because we had already been screened through security and we were ready to board. there were ~75 people waiting with me, sleeping in the airport. the next day we were told our flight wouldn't move out until that night, and that's when i realized: what are people doing right now? they were on their laptops/phones of course. well, the airport only lets you use a small amount of data (like 50mb) before it cuts off your mac address for 24 hours. so, i got a mcdonalds tray and put a piece of paper on it saying that i had wifi, $10 per person per hour cycle, then the password would change. my phone at the time (iphone 3gs) was filled with users connecting to my wifi hotspot. the flight didn't come until the next day, and people were still paying me $10 a piece to connect up until we boarded. I ended up making something like $1200 over that 24 hour period. i used quite a bit of data as i was on vacation for a week and didn't want to deal with poopy hotel internet (no offense to anyone)

What I think will happen is that for now AT&T will send out "warnings", but won't actually do much throttling, yet. That way, you can't complain about "unexpected" throttling since you've gotten fair warning.

I don't know when it'll be seriously enforced, but you can count on AT&T making it very noticeable when they do start seriously throttling unlimited users. Enjoy it while it lasts.
