Vista DX10 build?

Thread Starter
I planning out my PC for a while now, i will have close to 1100 in a week but i dont think i should get my rig yet. Should i hold on till 07 january to get a DX10 card for Vista and ill have like 1500 by then for sure, so i can get a kick as rig. Or should i just get a C2D a 7900GT a gig of OCZ and a P5B now? I want to get a futureproof system thats mainly for gameing, so i was thinkging of holding off till 07 im not really in a big rush but i do get bored using this comp cuase i cant play many games. BTW whens the quad cores coming out? are those worth the wait? ill have atleast 1500 by 07 for a fresh rig, you think i should hold off? Im really not sure what to do?

My 2 cents? Build a C2D rig right now, with a 7600GT or an X850 or something. Then when '07 come around, use the rest of the money to get your a DX10 card and sell your previous card to some sad computer illeterate person

Or... you can wait till Kentsfield (Core2 Quad) comes out at the end of this year and get a Bad Axe 2 board.

A DX9 build now will only need the graphics updating about a year after DX10, when pretty much all games will have made the conversion to DX10.

A DX9 build will be fine for a while!

Plus the first-gen cards will be VERY expensive. Best to wait until more come out and those first-gen cards are the cheaper ones. Or whatever. I'm confusing myself

i would wait for reliable technologies. . . if you want to get one now get a decent C2D rig and a basic vid. . .nothing exciting. . then get some good ram, a nice case and a reliable powerful PSU. . . this way you can upgrade the videocard when DX10 comes out but you have something in the mean time. C2D should remain on top till next summer when K8L makes an apperance. . . and i heard something about quad core being released in Q4 '07 but i wouldnt go with it quite yet. . def wouldnt wait for it. . . .and us the HD you have now etc b/c those are always easily upgradable and put that money into a decent Mobo/cpu that will last and be reliable.

I don't think you can ever say that your rig is futureproof, there's always some new thing that comes out that makes your rig obsolete (see WinXP, Doom3, Oblivion, Win VISTA, etc...)
If you can afford the wait, I'd wait for the DX10 cards. If you can't wait, I know I can't, than here's a thaught: Buy everything you mentioned before except the VID card. Buy a cheapo' VID card, I'm thinking of a 7300GT/7600GS ~80$, and upgrade it when the time comes (aka afordable DX10 cards). My bet is that at least at the begining, in 1Q 2007 the prices for these cards would be too much, and not that easy to find.
Cheers mate!

*EDIT: Quads will not be a very good bussiness for gaming, games are still single threaded, some of them dual threaded, but from the benches of kentsfield I haven't seen any benefits for the games.

Current games aren't heavily threaded; buy Quad Core CPUs to future proof your rig, as it's inevitable that games will become more and more multithreaded and take advantage of multicore CPU's (quad core FTW). As mentioned before I'd buy a fairly high end video card, because DX10 cards will be neither cheap, necessary, or available when they first debut. Buy a 7900GT or 7950GX2 now and start saving your pennies for those next gen gadgets.

There are a lot of other things you need for a rig that people often forget about. Thermal paste, Fans, heat sinks, all this other stuff sure adds up quick. It can ammount to anothe 150 bucks in no time.

Also, Good DDR2 is REALLY hard to come by cheaply these days. My DDR2 (3-3-3-8 @ 533) was 129 when I got it. Now, its 209. 150 bucks is a VERY low guess on how much you are going to spend.

Also, I wouldnt dwell on kentsfield too much. It is an extreme edition chip, so unless you get 1000 bucks to drop on a processor, quad core is probably out. I would say, wait for Kentfield to drop prices a small amount and then drop the bomb in january. if anything you will be able to cash in on dropping video card prices after christmas and after release of Dx10 technology.

In all honesty, a C2D is going to be a solid choice for a while. C2Ds like the 6400 and 6600 can be overclocked to really reduce any bottleneck with any single card solution right now. And after Dx10 comes out, the games will be coded to more properly use dual cores, so it will work out even better. The real issue is whether to wait for Dx10 or not. And really its up to you, but from looking at your rig it appears you have waited a LONG time for an upgrade. Whats another 2-3 months?
