Blade,
I am pretty much in the same prediciment and will watch this thread with interest.

I don't think I have really made a decision based on what I have read yet but its all going in the right direction.

Good thread topic! Presonally , I'd wait a little while and get a 'next-gen computer'. Assuming that your MoBo is the cornerstone of the system you're building I'd wait a little while...with flash storage technology, and MoBo integration around the corner, Hybrid Hard Drives, also with Vista and DX10 up and coming, I'd wait like a half year or so...check out these articles fo more info!

honeslty i think i will get a rig soon like less than a month and get a decent setup DX10 is coming soon but the prices will be mad high for the first line up i think waiting a good 6 months is good then ill get a DX10 Card but i mean a Asus P5W DH can run DX10 cards right? is there going to be new mobos that will only be able to i mean its still PCI-E so no problem right? and a E6400 seems like a good CPU for the cost plus a 7600GT or for a 100 more a 7900GT im not sure yet? if i get the 7900GT ill keep that for a good year atleast so DX10 will be go down alot by then and i can do a nice upgrade then. I am 16 and make 9$ an hour at bestbuy and need to save up for school and such I want to spend as little as possible and make this rig as futureproof as much as i can so i think a 7900GT should be a good deal for 300 CDN that is considering a 7600GT is 200.

If you can wait, then I say wait. But if it's really driving you nuts then upgrade your mobo/proc/ram to a c2d and buy a crappy pcie card for now. When DX10 is realeased you can upgrade then. Since any good card you buy now will be pretty much obsolete @ the launch of DX10. I've been trying to hold off but the prices of 7900/7950gt's are starting to tempt me. I will be strong.

lol the temptation is great.

I suppose it really all comes down to what we want from our rigs. I am much of the opinion of if it runs my games then its suitable. Some of the lads n lassies are genuine enthusiasts on here and will throw extra bucks at these rigs for that little more performance and prestige. Simple analogy is the people carrier versus the sports car. I know which one I would like for the wow factor but the people carrier will get me from A 2 B just the same, they are functionally the same.

Confused ? I got to stop afternoon drinking.

Anyway Blade based on your requirements, affordability and the current transitions in technology I would say your approach is the best. I seriously don't see a quick switch in game design to DX10. It will be the usual phase in which I think will take at least a year.

My opinion but still open to suggestions.=

mind you I would like the reassurance that my rig isn't redundant after a year but hey when AMD 64 bit CPU's came onto market after I just bought my p4 3gig I was raging. I thought I was going to miss out on so much. Well it ended up not affecting me in the slightest over the period of the last 4 years.
