It's impossible to defeat hackers/cheaters, you can only compensate. There will ALWAYS be a way to break the system.
I think everyone, especially on a IT forum should know that a 100% guaranteed security does not exist (and never will).

devs and security compagnie are always behind simply because it is more easy to be unfair ! thats like that with everything in our life .and probably more person are working to hack a game then the number of person that work too secure the game so ......

The Battlefield series developer is looking for someone willing to take up residence in its home office (Stockholm, Sweden) where they will be charged with "secure the online experience for all DICE titles."

Seriously, I would have at least applied. Know zilch about coding but, to counter hacks, that's not what it would take.

Why would you have to move to Stockholm, though..? It's 2012.

Still, you wonder if DICE will end up hiring a 'famous hacker' nobody has actually heard of thinking they'll go ahead and help. It's bad enough when Alpha and Beta participants release hacks/aimbots before a game is out to the public (Homefront/BF3 being the latest I know.)

Why would anybody want to end cheating on their game?

The way I see it, it's profitable to allow cheaters because it creates a circle:

Buy the game - They cheat - They get a ban - Buy the game again - Cheat - Get a ban - Buy the game again - Cheat - Get a ban - Buy the game again - Cheat - Get a ban - Buy the game again - Cheat - Get a ban - Buy the game again - Cheat - Get a ban - Buy the game again - Cheat - Get a ban - Buy the game again - Cheat - Get a ban - Buy the game again - Cheat - Get a ban - Buy the game again - Cheat - Get a ban - Buy the game again - Cheat - Get a ban - Buy the game again - Cheat - Get a ban - Buy the game again - Cheat - Get a ban - Buy the game again - Cheat - Get a ban - Buy the game again - Cheat - Get a ban - Buy the game again - Cheat - Get a ban - Buy the game again - Cheat - Get a ban - Buy the game again - Cheat - Get a ban - Buy the game again - Cheat - Get a ban - Buy the game again - Cheat - Get a ban - Buy the game again - Cheat - Get a ban - Buy the game again - Cheat - Get a ban - Buy the game again - Cheat - Get a ban - Buy the game again - Cheat - Get a ban - Buy the game again - Cheat - Get a ban - Buy the game again - Cheat - Get a ban - Buy the game again - Cheat - Get a ban - Buy the game again - Cheat - Get a ban - Buy the game again - Cheat - Get a ban - Buy the game again - Cheat - Get a ban - Buy the game again - Cheat - Get a ban - Buy the game again - Cheat - Get a ban - Buy the game again - Cheat - Get a ban - Buy the game again - Cheat - Get a ban - Buy the game again - Cheat - Get a ban - Buy the game again - Cheat - Get a ban - Buy the game again

That means easy profit.

It may well be about appearing to be trying to do something.

I suspect the best person for the job would be a very good hacker...set a thief to catch a thief type of thing. Remember when good hackers got offered security jobs....

That'd be a bad move in my opinion. All you need is a gamer, a "stand up" gamer, to register on all the sites that sell premium hacks and on other sites where hacks hang out. Kinda sniff 'em out around the net. Get the latest hacks, turn them in, have DICE or whoever make a counter.

I doubt the guys selling premium hacks give a cr@p; once they get their money, it's Mission Accomplished; then on to the next exploit, to make another round of dough. Always going to be some idiot willing to buy them and then boo hoo when they get banned.

DICE or whoever doesn't have to stay ahead of or prevent hacks; all they have to do is figure/implement a way to counter them rapidly. Premium hack comes out, 2 days later a small patch drops killing it. People don't have control over server files (unless my noob mind is oversimplifying here) so, DICE has all the power.

That is a short-sighted view.

How many copies of the games do the minority hackers purchase? A few thousand?
How many copies are not sold if everyone complains about hacking? A hundred thousand?

From the job requirements, this is not a hacker position per-say. It is more of a data analysis/mining and administrative role.

You don't need to know how to hack to identify hackers.

* "More easy to be unfair" has to do with game play, not development.
* Even if there are more people working to hack a game, it is still easier to secure a product. i.e. 1000+ people trying to figure out a password.... the owner just has to change the cipher and everyone has to start again.

I think the point being made here though is that the game devs can't actively prevent hacking/cheating, they're forced to be reactive. That's just how the process works, they won't know every vulnerability so they have to react when hackers exploit weak points.

That's in the North Pole or there abouts... Born and raised in South Texas, I once moved to Indianapolis, Indiana--endured 1 winter and moved right back to Houston. Snow, temps below 20 degrees...no thank you. Cargo shorts, flip flops and the beach 80% of the year are all I need.
