Help me out please

Thread Starter
I have recently built a rig for a home server. It's a AMD Athlon II x3 unlocked to quad-core with 8gig of RAM and plenty of HDD space.

I want to use it to store general media (music, movies, tv shows, etc.) as well as setup an email server. I would also like to be able to access the media from a remote site when on the road. If it's possible, I would also like to setup a VoIP phone server on it as well, but I haven't seen that done in conjunction with the other requirements.

I have been researching OSs for the past couple weeks, I want to use a linux distribution if it is available. But I am having a hard time finding out a good option for all of the above that actually shows how to incorporate these functions.

If anyone could make some good recommendations or point me in the right direction, that would be fantastic.

Also, the Fractal Designs Define Mini case is awesome for a home server build thumb.gif

ofr the OS you could look at freeBSD
http://www.freebsd.org/
and/or freeNAS as without including VOIP its a NAS
http://www.freenas.org/

for a voip server, you will need to run something like http://www.asterisk.org/ in a VM plus some extra hardware nics maybe be needed for phones..
i would if you can get a godd refurbished AMD rig or build your own for a voip server smile.gif

I wonder if running cat5e from the server>>gigabit switch>>phones would allow for multiple phones without requiring multiple NICs.. something to look into.

I'll take a look into FreeBSD, thank you for the speedy reply biggrin.gif

your welcome smile.gif

server>>gigabit switch>>phones should work, if you can get PoE ports on the switch even better to power the phones

normal buisness model is (not including any servers) gigabit PoE switch>>phones>>PC but use 802.1p tagging for voice traffic whic cuts down on cables

I currently run TrixBox for my VoIP phones and PBX. It's a branch-off of Asterisk. Made more for an end-user.

To incorporate all of these functions, you'll need to run things in a virtualized environment. Best for a safe practice.
