HD 7970, AMD driver install fails.

I have an MSI HD 7970 currently using:

Driver Packaging Version 8.921-111202a-129903E-ATI
Provider Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.
2D Driver Version 8.01.01.1215
2D Driver File Path /REGISTRY/MACHINE/SYSTEM/ControlSet001/Control/CLASS/{4D36E968-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}/0003
Direct3D Version 7.14.10.0885
OpenGL Version 6.14.10.11330
Catalyst Control Center Version 2012.0119.1236.22534
AMD Audio Driver Version 7.12.0.7704

I've been having a problem trying to update to the newest drivers (8.921.2 RC11). Every time CCC install manager gets to the AMD Display driver install it fails. It finishes the install and says there were errors/warnings and when I check the log it just says AMD display driver: FAIL.

I'm an admin, I've tried running the install as admin.
Disabled firewall/UAC.
Enabled unsigned driver installation.
Tried the drivers from autodetect, Guru3D's link, OCN's link, AMD's website: same issue with each one.

I don't know what else to try and it is pretty irritating being limited to only using the drivers on the MSI disc that came with my card.

Sometimes the older drivers need to be installed* first.

Edit *uninstalled I meant doh!

Do a full driver sweep and remove everything AMD.

Then do a fresh installation of drivers. Start with the CD that came with the card. Then upgrade from there. Good luck!

I tried everything as suggested and still no luck. I uninstalled previous drivers, did a sweep of all AMD display files, reinstalled drivers from CD (works fine) and I still get a driver fail error when attempting to install anything past this point. Also noticed that when Windows tried to automatically install their drivers for the card in the middle of the uninstall/reboot/reinstall process those drivers failed to install as well. I have a feeling it is something to do with Windows because the card works perfectly with the drivers from the CD. I just don't know what else to try short of a reformat ;/

RC11 failed for me also. I just stuck with the drivers on the CD. Might as well wait for the release of 12.2/3 for official 7970 support. Drivers on the CD works fine.
