Hey guys. Just saw the price point on the 7950, so now I have a more difficult choice in picking the graphic card for my new rig...

You can see my proposed build below. I will only be using a 1680 x 1050 resolution for the near future, but am considering eyefinity a bit further down the line. Primary function for the rig will be gaming. It is worth noting that while budget isn't really a factor and I am looking for a strong GPU, I am not so demanding that I am will happily shoulder a huge "cutting edge" premium for little benefit.

Based on what I have researched , I should buy either a 6970 or a 7970. Which doesn't sound like an equitable comparison, but hear me out here.

I can pick up a 6970 here for $300 after rebate, which seems like a pretty darn good deal. In fact, I wanted to check in with you guys if there was any problem with this particular version of the card since it seems to beat out the other 6970s by a very healthy margin. Heck, I could almost buy TWO of these for the current going price of the 7970. Main concerns are:

  • Crossfire power usage. I hear that these things are power hungry, and wonder whether my 850 watt PSU can handle two of these suckers plus everything else in my rig.
  • Does the selected brand have known issues? Is there a significantly better option among the 6970s?
  • Eyefinity. Will dual 6970s be up to snuff for the forseeable future?

The 7970 is a much shorter list. For the price differential the 7950 seems like a non player. The upside to this purchase is that it is a 7970. The downside is that, well, it is a 7970 and appears to have a very high "cutting edge" tax.

Assuming I am just wanting a powerful rig without getting price gouged, the 6970s seem like the direction to go. I would love to your thoughts and inputs and appreciate the help.

Edit: As I am sure it will come up (and rightfully so!), I am aware of the thread here asking a very similar question. However, since this is a bit more tailored to what I am looking for and touching on eyefinity/power usage questions, I didn't want to derail things things there. Mods can feel free to merge/delete if you feel this is redundant.

Get a 7970, It's on par/little bit slower than 2x6970s from what I've seen.
