Why doesn't he just make the design in production himself? Or why not have the ARM groups buy it jointly. It sounds like this great idea might just flounder for a long time...or worse be bought by Intel.

Also...would this mean that RAM would no longer be separate/up-gradable?

... level 4 cache? That benchmark is pretty memory-speed intensive, I'm not sure how well the improvement would be across all programs and benchmarks. When you approach something that is heavily L1/L2 cache dependent, you would probably see much poorer results.

ill wait and see when intel decides where the wall is.... dosnt look like theyve found one they havnt been able to break down or move around.

and integrating things together sound cool. providing you still get your other components and they dont go away. 8c/16t @ 7ghz, 4 gb ram and a IGPU equivalent to a 6970, all in a cpu, sounds pretty awesome, providing you still get to throw your dedicated cards in the mix along with excessive amounts of ram. surely no time soon, but intel has been making it a point to deliver powerful core performance with twice the threads and an igpu. ivy/ivy-E and PD around the corner, and haswell already popping up all over the internet... who knows what the next decade will provide. providing that 2012 is as overhyped as some other things weve seen on this site for the past year.

This is amazing building a simple processor with memory transistors this man is crazy and the technology is astounding.

Sounds like this technology will be good for servers and super computers. It does not sound like it would be used for desktop applications but more for specialized computing.

It cost tens of million to produce a design. It also requires everything like an ecosystem to support it. i.e. If you invented a new light-based memory chip and massed produced, you could not just sell it because it would be compatible with nothing.

The idea has been around for decades. wink.gif It is coming about now because the memory limit is being approached.

That benchmark was chosen specifically for that reason.


On the inverse, companies (like Facebook) are looking for more memory per CPU. They want CPUs that can address more and more memory for RAMDrives-like servers. Cores don't have to compete for resources if they are independent and don't have to work on the dataset (i.e. web serving).

However, for medical research, this design makes more sense since they working on one dependent dataset. I wonder how this would Fold....
