3 X Saphire 7950 or 2 X 7970 stock?

My motherboard is an asus x79 sabertooth. The last two pcie slots (16x and 8x) will have no space between them if I run 3 way GPU configurations. This means that if I run three 7950's there might be some temperature issues, and therefor noise issues (which I HATE). However, if I buy two 7970's with stock cooling, there will be more noise frown.gif. I am also wanting to get a slight OC on my cards to make sure BF:3 eyefinity has over 60fps on decent visuals. Which route should I go...

Also I'm running the haf x case, 200mm side fan duct and a 230mm front fan so the cooling is decent, not too much air but air at a low velocity.

Also I've been waiting two and a half months with a 6970 lightening which means running eyefinity is not an option...

Thanks guys smile.gif.

Ohh...I just realized - ATI has zero-core technology so the middle card (hottest one) will turn off on idle so noise isn't an issue on idle, but on a different note, will temperatures / dual 6 pins affect OCING performance? at ~1100mhz for 7950's?

Edit: I'm not sure whether the top/bottom card switches off but the middle one will for sure biggrin.gif.

Does anyone have pictures of the cards? I'm thinking I could mount a rubber spacer between the two cards on the space between the fans and make a small gap. I could also add a low rpm 60-80mm fan to blow air in smile.gif. - would no back-plate be an issue?

Edit 2: I also mean the sapphire dual fan version seen here: http://www.sapphiretech.com/presentation/product/?cid=1&gid=3&sgid=1157&pid=1450&psn=&lid=1&leg=0

I think you should buy three of the 7950's and then give one to me. Please.. Please...

Well if I buy these GPU's I'm getting one now and the other/other two the month after. I have other things IRL to buy hahahhaha.

I actually have a crazy idea...

Could I buy stock 7970 now, OC it to like ~1100-200 and when I buy one/two more 7970's in the future I'll just get the dual fan versions, however I'll run a PCIE 8x extension and run the reference 7970 on my PSU and have the blower hanging over the bottom in-front of the PSU which is where I've mounted a 120mm fan. The crossfire bridges are long enough biggrin.gif:D:D:D. I might be crazy but biggrin.gif.

Or I could place a spacer and a fan on it frown.gif.

My vote is for two 7970s. I cannot imagine what you will be doing that would require more.

BF:3 Max everything eyefinity 1080pX3?

Would I get a bottleneck though with a 3930k @ 4.625 JigaHurtz?

Mine can go to 4.8 stable but the voltage is too high and the noise too much to reckon with frown.gif.

I couldn't find any benchmarks of eyefinity with crossfire 7970's...can anyone give me a ballpark figure?

Thanks for the replies though guys, I'll just save my money then and get a custom loop with it for my cpu smile.gif.

Adding a 3rd card in multi-gpu setups have shown to improve the minimum framerates, but not help the average much.

Search for the review on google.

I would go with 3 cards.

Unless you go watercooling, I would stick with 2 7970's. Just OC the hell out of them and I doubt you'll find any game that won't run smooth as butter in triple 1080p.

And NO, your 3930K will not bottleneck a high-end multi-GPU setup at a huge resolution. I'm pretty sure even a stock 2500K wouldn't.
