Windows Thinks It's Using AMD64 Processor...

Windows identifies my Intel Q6600 processor as having AMD64 architecture. Is this typical, or is Windows confused?

Running SET at command prompt:

  • PROCESSOR_ARCHITECTURE=AMD64
  • PROCESSOR_IDENTIFIER=Intel64 Family 6 Model 30 Stepping 5, GenuineIntel

Built this computer 2 years ago. I don't know if it always did this or if I just noticed it.

Thanks.

I'm pretty sure AMD64 is synonymous with x64. I think AMD was the first to use the 64 bit architecture, thats why.

I wondered if that was it. Thank you.

AMD was the first to push out 64 bit x86 processors in 2003. Intel implemented the architecture used by AMD for their own implementation of 64 bit x86 in 2004.

AMD licenses the x86 instruction set from Intel, while Intel licenses the 64 bit instruction sets from AMD which is in turn built on the x86 instruction set.

Glad to see I was on the right track. thumb.gif
