A Hong Kong advocacy group called Students and Scholars Against Corporate Misbehavior published a warning, which was sent to Apple, to let the company know about the potential dangers of aluminum dust buildup.

The warning clearly went unnoticed, since two Foxconn factories exploded as a result of the aluminum dust. The first occurred in May 2011 in Foxconn's Chengdu factory, which killed four people and injured another 77. The second occurred in Shanghai and ended up injuring 59 workers while hospitalizing another 23.

This should have been investigated, because for the higher-ups that decided to ignore the warning should be charged with Third degree homicide ect..

It is very common for manufacturers to sell their product for much higher costs that they build them for.
The Nexus one for example had a $174 manufacturing cost.
The Samsung Galaxy tab has a $205 manufacturing cost... which is actually $100 lower than the iPad's (which is $300).

It's truly an industry standard and it's very unfair to single out one of the companies that do it.

I understand this seems like Apple hate, but Apple is rated as the top dog right now... so they are gonna take more heat than the others simply because of that. How often do you see a company like RCA in the news compared to Apple products? But as others have said and is pointed out a lot, these are universal in the market, almost every company is guilty of very similar things and pretty much all OCN'ers know this.

We understand its universal, but its gotta change. Apple is simply in the spotlight because Apple keeps jumping in our faces. Just like how there are far more virus' for Windows than say Fedora... cause people like to target the big guy. This would be a great time for Apple to restructure a little and enforce their standards though, showing that even the biggest companies can do the right thing. That would be great publicity, and possibly help change working conditions all around if others feel the pressure to match Apples kindness. Do it Apple, do a good deed.

Oh but you'll likely have to pay $1K for an iPhone now. But hey, we should take the hit to improve peoples lives... I'm game (aside from the iPhone, Android/WP7 for me)

It has more to do with Apple's act of being so "pious" and that they have the audacity to charge such high profit margins for no reason beyond attaching their name. I believe everyone here knows how deep the Chinese "sweatshop" labor goes into the industry and no delusions as to it being bad. But maybe it's just me...I'm tired of people telling me how great and more ethical Apple is compared to other companies.

PS: Thank you for this post as it goes further to show there's less that differentiates Apple from the rest of the industry. Outside of being the greatest marketing firm in while.

Let's face it, if you are the #1 tech company at the time, making probably the MOST profit shouldn't YOU be held to a higher standard then the rest of the guys? Shouldn't YOU be setting the trend of better working conditions? Better yet, move the factories back to USA.

If you want to sell your products and make that much profit bring the jobs home.

They've no proof that Apple actually ignored it. For all we know Apple contacted Foxconn about it. What can Apple actually do other than ask Foxconn to do something about it? Go and clean it up themselves? It's Foxconn's responsibility to make sure their workplace is safe.

You have to factor in a lot of other costs other than just the hardware. R&D, software, royalties, licensing, etc.

They're at least improving in this area and I can't say I've heard the same from any others using Foxconn. They've more than doubled their inspections per year of their facilities from ~110 to ~270, and then they've joined the FLA which will be doing their own independent inspections.

They are setting the standard: they've joined the FLA and have increased how many times they inspect their facilities per year from ~110 to ~270.

There's no way any company could bring the jobs back to the US and survive. The costs are just way too high.

Intel has many facilities here in the US, and they make huge profits.
