We know what will happen. GTX 680 will be 15% faster or so than the 7970, cost $100-150 more, and Nvidia keeps the performance crown. This is what happens. So what ifs a month later? Its a brand new generation. The 7970 isnt that impressive, its basically as fast as 560ti SLI, no?
You cant compare the GTX 580 to the 7970. That would be like saying " WHOA. That 9800GTX was crushed by the HD4870!"

Why do people keep on saying you can't compare a GTX580 to a 7970, or a GTX 580 is last gen?

To confirm you CAN compare since Nvidia has nothing else! It isn't really last gen either, since the GTX 580 is the most current generation Nvidia has. Yes Nvidia have a 28nm card coming out, but we have no solid proof of when, so for now it's their current gen card.

Don't worry green team, when Nvidia finally decides to release another card, then we can compare that with the 7970 too and make you feel good again.

I am just biding my time until March or April anyway and seeing what the best card is then. Green or Red I don't really care, just which is the best then.

Question is what is the headroom of this new 680? People are getting over 1350mhz on water with the 7970. That's getting to 45% oc and the card just came out. When they release new bios and drivers they will surely break 1400mhz. So at 15% the 680 still has a way to go to be on par with the 7970. The only way it takes the crown imo is if it oc's similar to the 7970.

You're asking questions with no answers on a part that probably won't be released for a long time. I'm gonna take a wild guess and say NV won't have a part out until July, if this article is true.

If it takes them until July to top the 7970 that will be an epic fail on Nvidia's part. The first to talk about 28nm tech and there already a month late to the party.

What if NV makes a true breakwith in regards in dynamic physics in games? What if they can make a GPU that doesn't take a ridiculously large performance hit for doing
physx as is currently the case? Personally I don't think physx is interesting AT ALL right now. Can NV improve that and make it better and faster? Would the wait be worth it? Its a tough question. Now i'm not sure if this article is true or not -- but its an interesting question.

Also: its not the end of the world if it does take that long (again, this date is speculation on my part). It happened before with the 5870, NV weathered that just fine.

This reminds me of Fermi.

They said launching in xxxx, then they said: oh, it's paper launch only

Same with 6 paychecks, it can be 6 weeks or 12 weeks for what we know.

In Europe we get paid every month so hey, it can be 6 months too.

Nvidia don't play fair and try to sabotage AMD (not to the same extent as Intel) when they can. They seem to have a larger market share so they could stand to lose some of it and give AMD a break after a less than spectacular launch of Bulldozer. Nvidia are doing fairly well in the tablet market as well with Tegra so it's not like they're going to be in much trouble if they let AMD take the high-end.

What on earth are you talking about? 7970 has ~4.5B transistors, and 2048 SPs. This is a gain over 6970's 2.7B transistors and 1536 SPs. That is, 33% more SPs, >50% more transistors, and a smaller die size. And the die shrink is actually 50%. If you compare GTX 580 and 7970 power consumption, and consider that it's Nvidia, they'll keep power consumption as high as a 580 almost certainly.

The GTX 680 or 780 is supposed to be 6B transistors and 1024 CUDA cores. Also there's a rumor that the core:shader ratio will be 1:1, which might help them get higher core clocks, more CUDA cores, and still keep power consumption reasonable. But really I have no clue.

Nvidia has to make the card in the $600 range. You are talking about 1000$+ single gpu cards.

33% more transistors (ie 33% bigger die size than 7970) and you think it'd be double the cost? Doubt it. Consider that the 7970 die size is smaller than 6970, and it could easily come down to $400 and be profitable depending on market conditions (ie if 680/780 was faster). And pricing at $600 is not at all unreasonable all things considered.

i dont even understand the qq about power consumption.

if u can afford a high tier card you can surely afford the electric bill.
