makes no sense to buy an ssd for bf3.

no, not just for BF3, but just having the OS on the SSD and everything else on a mech drive still make's the PC experience much much faster. but yes, there is no in game benefit in BF3

Though the drawback is obviously the 8-10 weeks lol.

Performance isn't a huge increase but its there if you are. As for your gpu, I reckon xfiring 6970's since they are realtively cheap now. For the price of one 7970, you can almost get 2 6970's.
