craigslist is your friend too. you can get a 500gb hdd on there for $50 or less. not much chance of picking up a bad 1.

Cheaper than $60? yes they are there.... but at what cost? This whole thread may turn out being moot now because speaking with my cousin again he seems like he might be more interested in the "fruit side" of my first post than the BF3 side, so potentially I could build a "Pear" mini with a quad and skip the decent GPU and just go with a bottom end.

And why is that? You build was good, but you failed the criteria of my first post. BF3 was supposed to be a standard and you 4890 is meh. A gigabyte board is mandatory. However like I stated above this all may become moot, as he is more interested in the "Fruitability" of this build more than gaming. Originally he was talking about BF3 now he's talking about playing TF2 "occasionally"
