Any simple way to avoid graphics slow down with GPU client? - Page 2

There must be a driver issue somewhere because I am running 2 GPU clients with the -advmethods tag, while running smp folding at 95% CPU usage and don't any any stuttering problems what so ever on my main rig.
I am using PriFinitty2 to set the priority of the GPU clients to above and SMP client to low.
Maybe your GPU is set to realtime priority but I don't see how that could make your computer unusable while folding. I mean my work computer is folding a GPU client on a GTX460 while folding 50% CPU on bonic and it has no stutter problems what so ever and its a dual core CPU.

I would suggest uninstalling your video card drivers, running drivers sweep then reinstall drivers and reinstall the GPU folding client.

Sounds like a driver issue. I can fold with 3 GPU's and SMP 12 and still use my computer without a noticeable hit to performance. I've never tried gaming while folding, but I can still surf the interwebs, listening to music, watch movies, etc.

However if SLI is enabled (while trying to fold) that will mess things up for me and give me problems like you're describing, but it doesn't appear that you're running an SLI configuration.

Ya there is probably some problem going on with the setup or the advmethods is still running. Anything over 2k points seems to be advmethods as far as GPUs go, at least from my experience.

I am able to fold on my 460 and play skyrim at the same time. Although it does cut my smp and gpu points in half. I occasionally have some problems while gaming but no problems besides that.

Unistall current driver, use Driver Sweeper in safe mode to clean out any old gunk, install 266.58 or 260.99. I had the same issue with my 460 last year, it lagged at the desktop and sounds like what you're describing, that time I went back to 260.99 (was using 27x.something), now I use 266.58 and it works great for me.

I just changed the driver a few days ago, and its still happening. I hate reinstalling drivers because it resets the config I spent an hour on to calibrate my monitor.

Try changing the priority of your GPU client, I had a similar issue with my GT 430 when I had it and that helped quite a bit. I still got a lag when first coming back from being away from the computer but once active the issue went away.

Depending on the client you are using you can lower the max GPU usage, but that hits PPD.

Which is more important?
PPD or Usability?

I've had this a couple of times on different machines, sometimes it just takes a driver reinstall to fix, sometimes it took a OS reinstall to fix. The machine that was able to be fixed with just a driver reinstall had a less than 3 month old OS install, but the machine that needed a full OS reinstall had the same OS for 18 months and had different drivers installed probably a dozen times, this leads me to hypothesize that it is related to old driver remnants or an otherwise bad/bloated software/driver environment for folding to run in. Maybe if you do try reinstalling the drivers try doing a complete driver sweeper and get rid of everything before installing the new drivers, maybe even any OC programs you have like MSI AB and then just try folding stock with a clean slate as far as drivers go. Then if you can fold stock with clean drivers, then you can reinstall MSI AB and reapply your OC and fan profile.

Usability, because I am also running a 24/7 minecraft server. If I could run it all day long, then it would help negate most of the PPD lost.

I set the CPU priority to low in task manager if thats what you mean. I even got a program called prio which allows me to save the priority and apply it at start up.

That might be your problem. For one the priority will get reset after every completed WU as the core restarts itself. So setting the priority even at book will not help to much.

However I would advise against changing the CPU priority because the bottleneck appears to be the GPU. It could not be getting the attention it needs from the CPU to figure out what it should be doing next. This might cause stutters as the GPU waits for the processing time it needs
