New router/modem reccomendations

Hey guys I'm a bit of a networking hardware newb, so I'm asking for a bit of advice on hardware. At the moment I'm living in a share house with some mates and the combo unit I brought with me has been acting up for the last few months, it's just some junky thomson tg585 v7. It randomly reboots and overheats and can not handle any sort of p2p software without causing huge packet losses. Even with no one at home and nothing else running on the network online gaming is next to impossible with the unit, its past its use by date.

I have seen 85-90% packet losses before, the net is unusable when that happens. I've tried tweaking settings in the unit but there isn't much there to change. I'm thinking about going down the combo road again for simplicity sake, I've heard really good things about the Billion 7800N and I can pick it up for about $165AUD.

Does anyone have any recommended combo units or modem/routers that will be able to handle 5 computers ( 4 laptops and a desktop) and a few smart phones around the 170ish mark?

And what can I do settings and configuration wise to limit the packet loss that happens with torrents?

Are there many advantages with using a separate modem and router besides being able to run dd wrt (i've used dd wrt in the past with an old d-link and liked it)?

Cheers thumb.gif

Okay I think I've narrowed it down to:

Netgear wndr3700 - $135AUD (seems to be a better deal than the 3500L for $98)
TP-Link TD-8817 modem - $29AUD

Bringing it to grand total of 164AUD, ended up being the same price as the billion 7800n.

I could get the wndr3800 for 15bucks more but i don't see much of an improvement other than having double the ram of the 3700 and not being able to flash dd wrt.

This is the part where I start doubting my choice and spend the next week reading reviews rolleyes.gif
