HD5850 won't overclock much

Hello and thanks for any advice you can give:
I just got my HD 5850 (I'm behind with technology, the card I got rid of was an x1950 pro), and it doesn't seem to overclock much.
The card was used so I don't know if the previous owner messed with it at all, but it seems to work fine - other than barely overclocking. I have read that people are getting outrageously high core and memory - 1000/1300 or whatever - but I can't get past 800/1175 in FurMark (stock cooling, stock voltage). Even that isn't completely "stable". The computer just shuts down and I'm assuming it is resetting the card. Although I can't get much out of FurMark, I can run BF3 at 1.16/900/1200 just fine for an hour or more but still not "benchmarked" or "stable". Also to note, while using FurMark if I turn the voltage up instead of the core or memory, it will shut down like I'm trying to push the core or memory. I have the fan running quite high so it is NOT overheating at all. Obviously I'm new to overclocking so any help would be grateful. Ask for any clarifications too. MSI Afterburner and FurMark.
Ah also, it is a reference card, and OEM.

Lots of people will tell you that FurMark is not the best indicator to use on your graphics card. It will often crash your system even though your card may be very well be stable. Furmark is stressing VRMs more than the graphics core iirc so that might be why your card is shutting down.. I used ATI tray tools or GPUtool if that is what it's called now. The fuzzy cube rendering. It's similar to Furmark, but not as stressful.

Other stress tests can be running loops of 3DMark11 or just playing a tough game like Metro2033 with everything maxed out for an hour. Furmark is unrealistic in terms of what your GPU will be put through during gaming.

Thanks for the GPU tool.
I managed to get to 1087-795-1300 while not overvolted and 1200-930-1300 with using that GPU-tool and I made sure the card was at the actual clocks with GPU-Z so I'm pretty sure it is legit. I ran both of them for about 15 minutes and there weren't more than one or two errors each (at slightly higher clocks) so I'm going to assume that's fine. The fan was running at 75% and the temp was at 74C but I'd rather my fan work harder than my temp be higher since a new fan is cheaper than a new card... o.O Again, this wasn't "benchmarked" or whatever so you guys can be skeptical but I guess it doesn't matter since new members can't be added to the list or whatever but I'll benchmark and get official results a little later on. Either way, thanks for the help; I have a much better framerate on BF3, COD5 etc... not that I need it on COD5. 45FPS to 60 now on BF3.
Also to note, or rather a couple of unrelated questions,
1: Why can't I go past 1300 in the memory clock in MSI afterburner unless I save at 1300 and re-open?
2: Why can't I click 'back' to go back a webpage in overclock.net?
3: Either I used it wrong, or the 'find max' tool in GPU-tool doesn't work right because it tried to say I could max at 1000+ core clock before I stopped it...

a)you need to post more specs of your sig rig..especially psu
b)1300 is only doable on about 5% of those cards
c) you should get rbe and gpu-z
d)you should also make a bootable flash drive
e)also..download rivatuner from guru3d.com

If your PC instantly shuts down on you when your voltage is increased that's usually a weak power supply problem. Just talking from my experience. My old PC with my 5850 used to just black screen shut down on FurMark if the card was overclocked while using an MSI 550 watt. But with the Corsair 650 no such problems; food for thought.

...and about the benchmarks, you can use 3DMark Vantage, 3DMark 11, Unigine Heaven, etc.

What is the goal of this thread by the way? Are you trying to get a certain overclock stable or something?

Ps; A good goal is 950/1250 on the 5850. Not every card can go higher than that. People that run 1000/1300 have very good cards.

My HD 5850 does 975/1200 @ 1.2v. BF3 is a good indicator of stability.

Thanks for all the help guys, I do appreciate it. While I could successfully benchmark to 930-1300 @ 1.2V in 3Dmark11 and Unigine, it wouldn't run in BF3 or Skyrim. It would seem that I can only run at or lower than 930-1250 @1.2V. I guess that's not bad for stock cooling though.

I know the thread is a couple weeks old but, just to add some comparison…

I was running a Visiontek HD5850 reference, which overclocked higher than 950-C / 1200-M. at about 1.2volts (Started throttling due to heat. I broke the card during the cooing upgrade. (Dumbass))

I purchased a used Diamond HD5850 reference as a replacement.

The Diamond barely hits 830-C 1160-M @ 1.25volts. I replaced the cooling with my old HR03-GT and a VRM-5 and it made no difference. Better temps, but no higher overclock. Benchmarks show much higher stability, but BF3 tells the real truth. Artifacts show up on ground surfaces in outdoor maps almost instantly when I max out.

As for memory, I notice micro stuttering when the memory starts showing instability. I’ve read that the memory has error correction so if it’s unstable; it just makes games run slower. That would explain the micro stuttering.

In my experience with benchmark or burn in software for video cards I have found that they are completely useless, period. Right after beating the hell out of the card with some graphics burn in for hours with no apparent problems, I run my favorite games and its artifact city. This has happened to me countless times. The burn in programs just heat the card up more so than they would in real world apps and they don’t give an accurate representation of stability. Sometimes it’s not even close.
