Let's build a silent Ivy Bridge PC together

I am sure many of you are waiting for the Ivy Bridge to be released before building a new PC, so why not co-operate and decide the best and silent components to use?

Here's what's on my mind:

CPU
Intel 3570K

CPU Cooler
Nofan CR-95C IcePipe 95W Fanless

graph-2.jpg

Thermal Grease
Nanoxia Nano TF-1000

134_diagr_gpu-xbt.png

GPU
Fanless Radeon HD 7xxx
or
Fanless PowerColor's SCS3 HD6850 + small fan

b_noise_load_en.png

SSD
Intel 310

2-3TB SATA HDD
TBD

HDD Silencers (must not increase temperatures)
Titan TTC-HD90

07235854644l.jpg

22_leto_2.jpg

PC Case
Fractal Design Define XL

image013.png

image008.png

PSU
Super Flower Golden King 550W aka Kingwin LZP-550

eco.jpg

Case Fan
2 x Noctua NF-S12B

Acoustical Noise 18,1 dBA
Acoustical Noise with L.N.A. 10,6 dBA
Acoustical Noise with U.L.N.A. 6,2* dBA

RAM (that fits with the CPU cooler attached, must have low heatsinks)
Crucial 8GB kit (4GBx2) DDR3 Ballistix Tactical UDIMM 240pin, 1866 MT/s, PC3-14900, CL9, 1.5V, CL9 ( 9-9-9-27 )

Any suggestions?

I couldn't wait to play Skyrim so I just built with sandy bridge, otherwise I'd be right there with you. I like the components you picked a lot. It might be a tossup between the Define XL and the FT02 for me, otherwise those components look just about perfect. I ran a 5850 fanless with an aftermarket Artic Cooling heatsink in an RV02 and it worked great since the fins were oriented vertically and allowed the bottom fans to blow air up through them.

You have a great idea here, but in terms of that passive CPU cooler there's 1 problem: it seems irrelevant.

Thank you! I personally love cases that look like servers aka with doors closed.

I believe it's because of the GPU, correct? And since I plan fanless GPU, this problem will be eliminated smile.gif

fanless gpu cooler hmm most not be an overclocker
post #6 of 18
Silent PCs are pretty useless except for very specific applications. A modern higher end GPU draws over 150w while the highest GPUs can draw well-over 300w overclocked. You won't be able to dissipate that much heat passively with a single or dual slot heatsink.

Inaudible PCs are much cheaper and easier to build. Watercooling with a large radiator and 500-700RPM fans will offer vastly superior performance and lower temperatures.
Once again...

Why the NoFan over the HR02? The HR02 would kill that NoFan without trying. I'm also not referring to the HR02 Macho, the inferior little brother.

For storage you'd be looking at WD Green Caviars [which run extremely quiet as is] and slide them into a Scythe Quiet Drive. As for temperature rising, at most it'll be 1-2C which is still way within the drive's tolerance...

A fanless GPU is really your only option... unless you go with an aftermarket ArcticCooling cooler and ramp those fan speeds down even further to eliminate any noise, but it would still be there...

what he said you can easily build a high performance pc with everything blocked and a couple of low rpm fans...

I plan to install 1 or 2 Noctua (or other) case fans to move the air. Haven't decided what to get yet.

That's more than few C smile.gif

In a fanless PC, not sure if this is a good idea and since I'll be running 2 x of them in RAID1, I'd rather drop temps and noise smile.gif

There are few more models here, if anyone is interested.

Ar far as HR-02 goes, this was my idea. However, then I saw this, although IT IS Macho (never knew there were two models)

I'd love to get HR-02 if it's better than NoFan AND I can fit ram with huge heatsinks smile.gif

Any benches against NoFan?

Just found this

It looks like NoFan beat it after all. Can you link to any other benches?
